View Full Version : Where to go after R&S 8 English?

I'm trying to do a little advanced planning. Dd is in 7th now and we're using CLE LA7. We had used R&S up to this year, and I plan to switch back to R&S for 8th. I don't really care for the R&S 9/10 books. TWTM suggests AG as an option. I used AG with previous dc, and I don't own it any more so I may be completely mistaken--but wouldn't AG be a bit of a step back after R&S? I remember liking AG, but that dc had never used R&S. I also liked the Stewart English books, but they seem more like something to be used to supplement another program.

Also, we are using CW series and will continue with Herodotus in 9th. So I imagine there is grammar in the CW. Maybe we don't need additional grammar any more by 9th? That really doesn't feel right! Suggestions?

Thanks,
Mary

The AG review books would be what you'd use, I'm guessing. Since they're not for learning new concepts, but for review, even if it's "a step back" it's keeping the concepts in their minds as they go over them.

As you said, they'll have some grammar in other stuff, so you won't be doing grammar-free schooling. :) I'm thinking that after going through the R&S 8 English, reviewing is all they'd need anyway.

You might consider the older levels of A Beka grammar. They are very thorough and systematic. We have been quite pleased. (And we are using CLE for 6th and have used R&S in the past.)

My ds is still young and finishing up R&S 6 but I was considering using Our Mother Tongue by Nancy Wilson as a review after R&S 8......that is if we haven't switched to MCT materials by then.

Honestly, I'd just bag formal grammar study after R&S 8. I'd use the grammar learned to edit papers. I would start practicing for the SAT grammar/writing portion, which I feel would give you enough to keep it all fresh.

Thank you all for your suggestions! I think when I go to home school conference this spring I'll have to look at AG again and check out A Beka. I used Abeka middle grades many years ago but not their upper levels.

And Michelle, after I posted last night, I went to the CLE website and checked out LA 9 & 10 (English 1) and liked what I saw. Dd would like to keep with the workbook format. She also likes the way it reviews more often than R&S. Last year when I was first looking at CLE LA, I remember you encouraging us to try it and we've been pretty happy with it. :001_smile:

Oh, and I don't dare look at MCT for fear I might like it, and I don't need any more choices!

Can you elaborate? :D

at the samples and S&S on the clp.org site? The CLE S&S (http://www.clp.org/documents/2451/original/2008_Scope_Sequence_Grades_7-12.pdf) is very detailed and tells much more than the R&S S&S.

CLE English 1 is used over 2 yrs (9/10) so it will not be done everyday freeing up time to concentrate on the other areas of English - vocabulary, literature and writing in high school. Since your ds completed R&S English 8 there will not be much new, just keeping high level grammar and usage fresh; and focusing on different types of writing. LU's 909 is Writing a Research Paper; LU 910 is Wrting and Presenting a Persuasive Paper; these are suppose to be used in grade 10. English 1 could be used all in one yr if you wish (10 Lu's x 15 lessons).

HTH :D

Dd is finishing up R&S 8, and I'm starting to plan for 9th grade and high school (!) I'm also debating what English dd should use in 9th and 10th? R&S 9/10 looks OK, but just it seems like SO much review... I'd like dd to keep things fresh in her mind, but don't know if I really 'love' the looks of R&S 9/10. I'm really pleased with R&S, so I don't know if I should jump ship... confused... it would be great to know what others have used in hs.

Thanks for the post....

What would you suggest to use for practice for the SAT grammar/writing portion?

Ds will not complete R&S 8 until the end of 9th grade.

Could you tell me if the diagramming in AG is the same as that in R&S? Dd is finally ready to stop doing R&S next year (she doesn't really need it now, but wanted to do it because it's easier than analyzing lit, so she's doing less lit than otherwise.) She's going to do American history next year, possibly Notgrass (since that's the only suggestion I've has so far on my thread asking about a high school workbooky type history), and I'd like to tie lit into her history reading. I noticed that one of the AG reviews is American authors.

She doesn't need grammar review, but it reduces the literary analysis battle. We've done that this year by not making her do the analysis in essay form, but in sentence & paragraph answer form and by having her do R&S8.

AG uses classical sentence diagraming. It's the same as R&S.

I like the idea of what one poster said, not just doing more grammar, but doing SAT grammer/wriitng review, but what do you use? We have the college board SAT prep book (dd does a section a day), but that's not really reviewing, also, once the 10 sample tests are done that's it...
What else to use for SAT grammer/writing review?

Thanks so much!

We liked Princeton Review SAT prep b/c it gave you real SAT questions and then broke them down and showed why the answers were given.
It covered some of the more common errors, involving comma splices, punctuation errors, stuff like that--
It's of great benefit on the SAT grammar portion to know phrases and clauses, and to know correct punctuation. I was surprised how much there was!
After you go thru one book, get another--keep practicing.
Also practice writing timed essays. Go back thru those essays and see where the grammar mistakes are. If you do an essay a week for a year and a half, you will get pretty darn good at them. Make sure you know what the College Board is looking for in an essay, too--there are plenty of web sites to help, and there are good prep books out there for this, too.

I'd also recommend that your child do the SAT Question of the Day (http://sat.collegeboard.com/practice/sat-question-of-the-day). The topic varies from day to day, but all of the practice is beneficial.

thanks for the SAT grammer/writing review ideas! I think we may go that route or AG review books...

Also, on transcripts what should I write for English or does Lit take its place? This is dd first year in hs, so all new territory for me!! LOL

Thanks!
