He's very much into the Copper Scroll type books - I don't mean to say necessarily Christian books but definitely free of magic and heavier teen issue type books on the shelves in our youth section currently.

Has he read any of Henty's historical fiction? My ds loved the Scarlett Pimpernell by Baroness d'Orczy, it is a whole series of books set during the French Revolution. DS also liked Sherlock Holmes and Father Brown mysteries. Books by Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, Robert Louis Stevenson, Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, also.

Try some Thomas Costain books (mostly out of print) for historical fiction. My sons have loved the books about Gengis Khan and Napoleon. These are great adventure stories. Another suggestion - the Rafael Sabatini books (some of which have been made into movies). They are great swashbuckling, good overcomes evil, type of stories.

also James Patterson has a series for younger readers (meaning teens), but I have not read them.

Jeff and Michael Shaara (http://www.jeffshaara.com/) write books about America's history and the wars the U.S. has been involved with (Civil War, WW I & II). Michael Shaara wrote For the Love of the Game (about baseball), Jeff Shaara wrote Gods and Generals (about the end of the Civil War).

He liked Ender's Game a great deal, which is science fiction and so involves improbable situations, but not magic. He enjoyed the sequels slightly less.

He liked Cheaper by the Dozen (the book, not the recent movie) which is clean and has no magic. That's a good picture of a father.

These might be below his level, but my ds12 is reading books by Max Elliot Anderson (https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_/105-8375637-3181258?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=Max+Elliot+Anderson&x=19&y=20). He is really enjoying them!

Have you tried the book, Honey for a Teen's Heart? I have her book for a woman and kids, and they always suggest wholesome reading. Not sure about magic, though.

[QUOTE=Laura K (NC);126831]Jeff and Michael Shaara (http://www.jeffshaara.com/) write books about America's history and the wars the U.S. has been involved with (Civil War, WW I & II). My 15/16 yr-old ds has read Jeff Shaara's To the Last Man and The Rising Tide and enjoyed them both. Historical "fiction" (these books hardly seem fiction to me, but that is where you find them in the library) is great for this age.

How about the Alex Rider Series? It is a spy adventure series. The main character is a 14 year old boy. Sort of like a James Bond for teens.
