My husband and I are considering a move.
My oldest son would be a 7th grader next year and is very serious about his wrestling so has decided that he wants to attend high school. It is really the only place he would be able to compete at the high school level. There is no way I would even consider sending him to high school where we live now...gangs, drugs, violence including recent bomb threats and guns in school, plus school scores at almost the very bottom as far as state rankings. Not to mention that their wrestling program is terrible.
My choices at this point are to either move or place him in a private school. The only close private school which has excellant academic programs and a good wrestling program is over $11000 a year which we could afford for one child but should his brother decide to attend high school (I am pretty confident he will want to because his brother is) would be completely not affordable.
So back to choice number one...moving. One of the best school districts in the state is about 40 minutes from where we live now. I am currently travelling there 2-3 times a week for dd's violin and fiddle and oldest ds's wrestling club. (Just thinking about the amount of time and gas money eliminated from moving is nearly enough to make me want to now.) The problems with moving there are that it is a very hustle-bustle town and many of the people are very fake and love to gossip (I like quiet and homey with privacy), the taxes are about 2.5 times what we pay now (but less than half the private school tuition for 2 plus my current taxes), and my husband and I love our house now. I know, a house should be an investment and we shouldn't get attached but we live on a lake and the house was a definite fixer-upper when we bought it but we have fixed it up just the way we like it. It isn't a perfect house for our family and we could use about one more room attached to it for perfection.
Anyway, is it worth it to move simply for school? I am thinking we'd only have to live there 7-8 years (I plan to homeschool my 5yo through high school so only have to wait until the boys are finished) then we could move out of state which is our ultimate goal once the kids are grown.
Any input would be appreciated.
