Hello,

I am reaching out for some help. My niece was recently dx with Central auditory processing disorder. She was diagnosis by a psychologist at the Dan Marino center here in Weston Florida. She also had an auditory evaluation at Nova which confirmed CAPD. My sister was told her next steps were to get her daughter speech therapy. When she went to her primary doctor he refused to give her an eval for speech. He told her he did not believe it was CAPD and wants her to see a psychologist because he thinks it is all emotional. My sister is at the end of her rope. This provider is making her feel like her daughter is unstable and that she did something wrong. I just need some guidance. OK all things point to the dx of CAPD so what do we do about it. Is is something she will have to live with, does she grow out of it? How can I help my sister and my niece get what she needs. Anyone who has gone through this please help. Thank you.

Your sister should find a different primary doctor.

If you Google "auditory processing disorder", you will find a lot of information about APD. (It used to be called CAPD, but current terminology has simplified it to APD.) There are different subtypes of APD, some of which are helped by sound therapy. Decoding deficit subtype, and possibly also integration subtype, are often helped by FastForWord (http://www.fastforword.com).

Your sister should find a different primary doctor..

I second this! Find a doctor who will listen to your sister and not his own feelings.

Can you tell me a little bit more about your dn's symptoms? I have a dd who has some sort of processing issues, but I'm not sure what's going on with her. We are trying to find new health insurance, so I can't do anything until after we get that issue addressed. I'm wondering what issues your dn has that led to her dx. Thanks.

who knows his/her stuff can do a cordically-evoked potential (it looks like an EEG, with wires stuck on the head) that actually measures the processing speed of the brain. Results of such a test would prove that it is NOT psychological!!

Time for a new dr! Go into the new dr. armed with the recent evals and reports and ask for the referral. When I did it I had a copy of the info to hand the nurse for the file and a copy for the new Ped to have in hand while we talked, one for me too. I dressed professionally instead of in my mommy clothes and was calm and friendly, but firm. I got what I wanted.
