Hello,

I used to post on these boards several years ago before we moved and took on a huge restoration project. I am still homeschooling and am happy to finally have the time to be back.

My question is, "Have any of you used the Intermediate Algebra Course by Margaret Lial/Hornsby/Addison Wellsely?"

I am currently using the "Basic College Mathematics Course" for my 12 year old son and he is thriving. I purchased a used copy of Beginning Algebra and I was really impressed with it. I will be using it next year.

I now have an opportunity to purchase a used copy of the 9th edition of the Intermediate Algebra and solutions manual for a very lucrative price. However, I want to make sure that this course is still very good and easy to use. My homeschool graduate daughter and I had a couple of ridiculous Algebra 2 books that thankfully, because she is such an awesome mathematician and I was very comfortable with the subject, we made it through. But, WE HATED those books and so I don't want to just assume that because the earlier books are good, the later ones are as well. It seems as though some series are not consistent from beginning to end.

Thanks for your input,
Faith Manor

Welcome back, Faith.

My daughter used Beginning Algebra by Margaret Lial in 8th grade. That was followed by Harold Jacobs' Geometry, 2nd edition. In 10th grade, she used Lial's Intermediate Algebra. My husband supervised the coursework as my daughter did it with a friend. My daughter then placed into College Algebra at the local community college which she followed with a Trigonometry class. Both of those classes used the same textbook, Sullivan's PreCalculus. In 12th grade, she took AP Statistics through PA Homeschoolers.

All that to say, we've been very pleased with the Margaret Lial books we have used here. My husband tutors math, and he routinely uses Margaret Lial's Algebra books.

Regards,
Kareni

My DD also used Beginning Algebra for 8th grade and is currently using Jacob's Geometry in 9th. I just purchased a used Intermediate Algebra 8th edition for next year. We had such success with Beginning Algebra that I could not even consider using anything other than Lial's.

I appreciate the input and am glad to know that others have had success all the way through the Lial's series.

Best Wishes!

By any chance, did you used to post as Church Pat of the Manor, or something like that? That poster, I believe, was restoring a church building to live in. Your board name and what you mentioned here is so similar!:)

We have most of the restoration done but the balcony is still in "construction" phase and we have had some trouble getting the in floor heating done in the living (sanctuary). Part of the heating issue is that super husband started having to work 80 hours per week for his job and just can't the time to work it out. We have converted to a wood boiler (outside) and so heating can be more difficult to regulate but WOW cheaper!

Dd 18 graduated from homeschool in May and is in paramedic school. She would like to do emergency work for two years and then go to nursing school and get her C.N.M. degree following that. I am now down to three to homeschool (the next oldest turns 13 yet this month and getting much too tall for his mother's liking!)

It's been a long haul for hubby and the house is wonderful! We maintained the cathedral windows and antqiue lights. My sister was married here two years ago in the (sanctuary) living room which was especially sentimental because our parents were married in that same spot nearly 50 years ago.

I've had some health problems that I have come through pretty well, although some lingering angst, but I think it has made me more introverted than I was when I first began posting here. But, its still me....just a much quieter version.

Thanks to all for responding. I am going to go with the Lial's. I think I just needed confirmation that it was a good choice!

Well, welcome back!!!! I used to enjoy reading your posts on the old boards, esp. about your reno project! And I've seen posts here with people asking about you, wondering how you were. Nice to "see" you again, and to hear about your current life!

Welcome back.:001_smile:
I can't help you with the math, I've never used it before, but I wanted to say your new "house" sounds beautiful!

Hi ChurchPat! I don't know anything about the Algebra book, but just want to say welcome back! I've wondered about you often since we moved to this new board. It's good to see you here!

Hey, we were just talking about you a few weeks ago while reminiscing about the people we lost in the board move. It's good to see you back!

I use to post as Christina in OR back in the day btw.

Good to see you! I enjoyed following your rehab story. Sorry to hear of the intervening health issues and long work hours for dh. Glad to see you're back, though!

My ds, who loves math, complained that they were too "nuts and bolts" and not enough proofs and theory (yes, he is an uber-geek when it comes to math), but he is taking calculus now and is *very* well-prepared. I will probably do the same for the next child.

Just wanted to add my "Welcome back!" post.

I can't help you on that book. We tried Lial's BCM with dd when she was 12, but she wanted to do a full lesson, but also didn't want to because they were so long. It just didn't work out for us.

I hope you start posting more. You always had such neat things to share on the old board.
