I just wanted to let you know that Keystone National High School offers four years of spanish. The info. is on their website. I have not done much research on it but they are going to have a booth at our homeschool conference in June. One big problem is the price. However, it may be an option, since many to the "learn at home" courses give only two years. Our goal is mastery of spanish while earning high school credit.

Beth, you didn't ask about this, but since we've chatted a little about UW, I thought I'd take this opportunity to mention something (and you might already know this). UW requires "documentation" of certain high school credits, including two years of the same foreign language. "Documentation" is satisfied by the majority of applicants by accredited public or private school transcripts. Homeschoolers in WA may also earn "documented" credits by taking foreign language classes at public or private high schools. But UW will also accept foreign language credits earned through accredited correspondence schools (including American School, and I'm betting Keystone). Students can also satisfy this requirement with SAT II subject test scores. Another really nice option, though (and the one our son used) is dual enrollment cc classes because you'll end up with college credits too (duh).

Just a heads up as you plan your high school foreign language journey!

Thank you Janet! I'm so glad that that you and others here have "gone before" and can set me straight! I am blessed :)

I have noticed that most of them only offer 2 years for each foreign language. That is why I keep looking at Keystone, since they offer 4. If you come across any cheaper options that will allow for 4 high school credits please let me know, and I will be keeping my eyes open for more too!

I'm so glad that I read your post about the "documentation" requirement for homeschooled students!

How many quarters of foreign language did your son take at the community college? From what I've just read at the UW website, each quarter of college-level foreign language study is considered to be equal to one year of high school study. If I'm understanding this correctly, a high school student who takes foreign language classes through the community college would only need 2 quarters of study, not two calendar years?

In our state's dual enrollment program (Running Start), a one-quarter (5 hour) cc class (that otherwise meets Running Start requirements) earns the student one full high school credit.
