We have not done well with RS 5 and 6. My son has watched the info on Analytical Grammar and thinks it will be much better for him.
I can't quite swallow the $100 price tag for it but I also have concerns about the amount of instruction. It doesn't look like someone who is struggling with grammar would have an easy time with AG.
What are your throughts?
I will plunk that much cash down, we just need something that will work. I personally am wondering if RS isn't a favorite here because of all the writing work required but who knows...it is confusing to me to teach also.

Dd used Rod & Staff halfway through level 6. She switched to AG and liked it. It's very efficient and to the point. She picks up things very quickly and AG saves her a lot of time compared to R & S.

Ds is very different. He needs the review and simple but thorough method of R & S. I will probably use R & S for him through grade 8 and save AG for high school. Dd is doing AG in 6th grade.

Never mind.
We tried the sample from the online AG site and he was clueless by the time we got to the end of the lesson.

As much as he hates it we're going back to RS.
Pray for us :)

Momee,

The sample lesson on the website is intended to show how the lessons are set up. It's the third unit, so it's assuming the student has done the first two. I wouldn't expect a child to "try" the sample unit without having done the first two. The way AG works is that every unit calls upon what's been learned in all the previous units. That's why your son was confused. Just wanted to explain that.

We left Rod & Staff and went to Learning Language Arts Through Literature. My boys weren't struggling so much and they felt they were learning the same things as they learned the past few years. Too much time was being spent with the subject and there were other things I want to tackle with them. LLATL is much lighter in the amount of work covered in a day but it is very thorough teaching grammar rules. It has copy work and dictation worked into the lessons. I like that because I easily forget to do it. Each unit is based on a book from literature. It doesn't flow with our reading in history but the books are classics. I use them for fun reading in my boys schedule. Also , the curriculum is not expensive.
