What would you recommend for reading about characteristics of and how to deal with gifted children? And how do you determine the difference between a bright child and a gifted one? Is it just IQ? Or do you take into account behavioral issues? I've recently become curious to learn more about this subject.

I'd really like to know too! Dh and I were designated GT in ps back in the day and am pretty sure at least my oldest is as well. I would love to know more about it, how to best meet his needs, and what to look forward to in the future.

I would start with the book list (http://www.hoagiesgifted.org/gifted_books.htm) at Hoagie's. Jim Delisle's books I found especially helpful.

I really loved the book "Gifted Children: Myths and Realities" by Ellen Winner. http://www.amazon.com/Gifted-Children-Realities-Ellen-Winner/dp/0465017592/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1266429957&sr=8-1-fkmr0
I've read many others but this one always comes to mind when anyone asks.

A Parent's Guide to Gifted Children (http://http://www.amazon.com/Parents-Guide-Gifted-Children/dp/0910707529/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1266435281&sr=8-1) by James T Webb has really been incredible for me as far as increasing my understanding and giving me concrete strategies for dealing with some of the challenges.

I second this book.
The Hoagie's (http://www.hoagiesgifted.org/) site is good. So is Gifted Development Center (http://www.gifteddevelopment.com/).
Deborah Ruf's site (http://educationaloptions.com/).
ETA: Oops, you asked for books! I bet there are some book recommendations on those sites!!

James Webb's book is outstanding. I'm also a huge fan of Lisa Rivero's Creative Homeschooling for Gifted Families. (The newest edition changed the title to Smart Families- I have the older version, but I don't know if there are any major differences in the text.)
