Hi, I hope someone can give me some information on the online classes that are offered by Art of Problem Solving. I am considering having my dd 13 take the online Algebra I course this summer. She handled the pretest fine.

I'm wondering if any of you have had your kids take the class online or even had your kiddos work through the text and if so, how did it go?

I thought this summer class might be a good way to go as she won't have a lot of other academic stuff going on and will be able to really focus on it.

TIA!:001_smile:

Hi -
Haven't taken the Algebra I here, but have taken Intro to COunting and Probability. Try doing a search on this forum for AoPS and you'll get several posts with general info about AoPS courses.

My 14yos has not taken the alg 1 course, either. He did take the Counting and Probability class. He is enrolled to take the alg 3 course starting in Mar. I have its textbook and it is a very challenging course.

It is very hard. 24 weeks, every week you have about 15 questions homework. These are hard questions and also a total of 4 challenge set (about 25-30 questions each).

My son worked through the text. The problems are definitely challenging. If your daughter takes the online class and gets stuck, she can ask for help from one of the AoPS teachers.

Thank you, ladies!

It doesn't seem like the Algebra I is 24 weeks. The Geometry is, though. However, I noticed on the site that what used to be the Intro to Algebra has been divided into two classes. It looks like each is about 16 weeks and covers half of their text book. It goes from early June to early September. She's a motivated kid, but I'm still unsure about this because I don't want it to be too fast or overwhelming for her. I suppose I can get the texts first and see what I think. She really seems to love online courses.

Thanks again, everyone. I really appreciate your input. :001_smile:

I posted a few questions on the AoPS forum about the Algebra class and received an excellent response from the head instructor (http://www.artofproblemsolving.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?p=1780801#1780801).

HTH!

Thank you, Handmaiden! I appreciate the link and the info. I think I will sign up my dd for their Algebra I course. I'm hoping she likes it, but knowing that you can back out after the first class or two is good to know if it seems like it won't work out. I plan to sign her up for the summer course and get the books ahead of time so she can take a look at it and maybe start a bit sooner on her own. I'd love for this to work so that she can continue to take math courses through AoPS.

Again, thank you! :001_smile:

Violet, you're welcome! As I'm planning on signing up for the class in the fall, I'd really love to hear how she does in the Summer class. Will you please post an update and let us know?

Best wishes to her! :001_smile:

My daughter got about 1/2 way through the course. The problems in the book are interesting, and not too hard, but some of the challenge ones for the course were definitely hard! I would agree, there's a lot of reading in the book, I would say it's quite an interesting algebra book.

At first the class seemed too easy, but it did get hard later on, and she didn't have enough time--we also had time conflicts with the class so you can only read the transcript.

I will update. Is your child going to take the class in the evening in the fall? ETA: I see they are also offering Algebra I in the daytime in the fall. I didn't know that. I just found their schedule so I will have to check that out.

Thanks again for your help.

Thanks, Nancy. That's why I was going to sign her up for the summer evening class. She should not really have any conflicts. During the year, she can't take evening classes due to her extracurriculars.
