After 8th grade R&S Grammar the series focuses on writing while reviewing the grammar we've already learned. Does anyone know a lighter program to keep my daughter's grammar skills sharp? She'll be using something else for writing.
Any suggestions?

Did you just go to Abeka grade 9?
ETA: Do these also contain diagramming?
Thanks!

I didn't do grammar after R&S 8 'cause I thought my kids had had enough. We just concentrated on sharpening writing skills during high school.

We didn't formally study grammar after R & S 8. We intensified our studies of kit/comp.

We are considering Analytical Grammar. Does anyone know anything about it?

Sorry, but I'm no help here. My dc really needed more grammar after R&S 8th, so we used the 9th and 10th grade books. Dd felt it was well worthwhile. She really has grammar cemented now. Ds didn't really like it, but I made him do it anyway.
It would be great if my dc didn't need it, but we live in a community where poor grammar usage is rampant (How're ya doin' today? I'm good!), and I felt I needed to inoculate against that.
Please don't throw tomatoes.

Hi,
We have also used the 2 high school level Rod & Staff books. My boys also needed more grammar help. We unfortunately live in the middle of a very poor part of Indianapolis and the grammar that they hear every day is just terrible. I guess I am innoculating as well.
We don't always do every activity as written but the reinforcement has been helpful.

I'd consider doing SAT grammar prep using something like Princeton Review or Rocket Review. The rest you can probably cover by having her edit her own writing--

My daughter used Rod and Staff from 4th to 8th grade. She had a very solid foundation of grammar to say the least. She is currently using Analytical Grammar this year and it's been a lighter load of English thus far. We're going to try and finish the book in one year and then focus more on Essay/Research writing and literature for the remainder of her high school years.
I have the review workbook from AG as well and plan on having her complete one of those every couple of weeks throughout those remainder years. Now I'm debating whether to just use Analytical Grammar with my younger daughter all the way through instead of R&S. Haven't decided yet.
For those of you questioning AG, I recommend it. It's very thorough yet easy to grasp. No complaints here so far.

Something you can do to save money and time, but still do grammar every year in high school: Pick up the A Beka 9 grammar book. In 9th grade, have your student do all of the odd numbered questions. In 10th grade have them cycle through again completing all of the even numbered problems. In 11th pick up the level 10 book. Repeat the odd, even cycle with that book. You'll cycle through the ideas four times. I think of it as lifting weights or doing sit ups. Boring but effective. :001_smile:
OR you could just use the level 10 book in 9th grade and 10th grade. If the kid is rock-solid, switch to daily grams Ultimate Series:

The Analytical Grammar High School Reinforcement looks fun! Does it review all the grammar we learned in R&S? My daughter loved the sample. The Easy Grammar Ultimate Series is also interesting. I'd love to hear any comparisons of these two.
I'm so glad I asked! Thanks for the ideas.:001_smile:

There is a sample of the American Authors HS book on our web site. There are 18 worksheets in each book (American, British, World authors and Shakespeare's Plays). Each worksheet has:
-2 sentences to parse and diagram
-3 sentences to answer grammatical analysis questions (what's the gerund phrase in this sentence ... what job is it doing, etc.)
-2-3 paragraphs to copy-edit for punctuation and usage errors (British, World and Shakespeare)
OR
-2 sentences in which the student inserts the needed punctuation and 3 sentences with usage questions ["... to (who/whom) it may concern ...] (American only)
The sentences all assume the child has learned and mastered grammar (phrases and clauses). The book doesn't TEACH, it REINFORCES what the child already knows. That's why the bi-weekly schedule is appropriate. If the student doesn't know the material, they must do a daily, rigorous grammar program until its learned. Once mastered, grammar is reinforced through periodic work like this and by being held accountable for proper usage and punctuation when he or she writes.
My mother wrote AG. She and I together wrote the high school books, just FYI.

After looking over the 7th grade book, I decided that there was no need to formally study grammar past that book. I also decided that I wasn't spending another $50 on another grammar book. I am having my daughter go through the 1st half of the 7th grade book in 8th grade for review and she will do the second half next year in 9th. She never had any problems with grammar but she couldn't concentrate on other things (writing, higher level math, vocabulary) if I had her spend her time doing another grammar book.

I agree with Sandy and Susan. Spend that extra time on writing, writing, and more writing. LOTS AND LOTS of writing.
