My ds (8th) is currently using Apologia Physical Science and I am considering a BJU science track for high school. Would BJU's Physical Science be redundant or is there enough difference and depth to make another year worthwhile? He is not a terribly strong math student (he'll be in Alg. 1 next year) and I thought that an extra year of math before he hit Bio and Chem would be to his advantage, but I am conflicted about repeating Physical Science if BJU is going to be similar to Apologia. If it matters, he would use the DVDs.

Thanks so much!

My son is using BJU Physical Science this year with Dive Cds. I think that it is an in depth and rigorous program. I chose to use the newest edition and the BJU DVDs use the last edition. The Dive cd is ok, but I really wish that I had gone with the BJU DVDs and the older edition.

I have included links for the table of contents for the Apologia and BJU Physical Science books. BJU only covers Physics and Chemistry in the Physical Science Book.

I hope this helps.

Deanna:

Can you tell me what you do not like about the DIVE CD for BJU Physical Science? That was my plan for next year because my two kids that would be using it preferred the new BJU book over the old BJU book. I was planning on using the new book but with the Lab DVD from BJU and just use the DIVE CD's for lectures.

In the past I have used new edition BJU books with the older DVD's, but the TOC between the old Physical Science book and the new is very different.

Thanks.

Has your ds already done BJU Space and Earth science? I know that it is an 8th grade course, but it is very in-depth. I would count it as a high school level science if the student completed all of the activities. I have used the BJU Physical Science and it is a very thorough introduction to chemistry and physics. I have not used the Apologia Physical Science. Have you compared the tables of contents? I would hesitate to have physical science classes 2 years in a row.

I had not thought of that! Thanks for the idea!!!

Any other thoughts out there from the hive?

I am wondering, too.

One more question... Did you use the DVDs with Space and Earth? I looked at the sample on the BJU's webiste and it said the instructor was Mrs. Vick, but the lecture was taught by someone else. Do you know who it is and who will actually be teaching the course?

Thanks!

Mrs. Vick is the instructor and covers the material, but Miss Correy (sp) does the investigations.

Thanks! That must be the case with the physical science videos as well. I was so confused.

The Dive DVDs are short and there is not a lot of info on them. Most of the lectures are only 10 -20 minutes and for most chapters there is only 1 lecture, which does not cover all of the subject matter. I did not follow the Dive syllabus, I just had my son read the entire chapter and watch the DVDs to gain a little more info. My opinion is that the material given in the chapters is at a level that requires a teacher to get the most out of it. My son is learning, but not at the depth I would like. I am having him take the tests, but I allow him to use the book - in other words an open book test. Last year we used the new Life Science book and that went great. He loved it, but the material was not as in depth as it is in Physical Science.

I was just looking at the sequence suggested on the DIVE site:

http://www.diveintomath.com/pageDisplay.cfm?pageno=452ans&zpid=452&sesstime=now

I remember him saying that Apologia is much different than a BJU type physical science course, which is intro to physics/chemistry. Dd12 is doing Apologia physical science this year for 7th and is struggling a bit, as she's not had formal science before. We overhauling on plan and are going to use BJU Life Science and Earth Science, and start BJU physical science with DIVE in 9th grade.

Good luck!
