Because PayPal charges a fee if you want to accept credit cards.

If the buyer uses a credit card paypal, Paypal charges the seller a small fee to pay the credit card compay. Some sellers are already paying postage as well. I couldn't verify this just now with my Ebay savy husband but I think that's the reason.:)

you can always offer to pay the sellers cc fees through paypal. The worst they can say is "no".

so I would just offer an additional 3% or 2.9% or whatever it is that PayPal takes out of their, that seems reasonable, if thats right no need to clarify, but if I'm wrong correct me--thank you much--

The only problem is that once someone begins accepting credit cards, PayPal moves them to a different type of account and a fee is charged on all their further transactions. You might be willing to pay extra to cover the fees, but the next person won't necessarily do so - and that means the seller loses money.

In situations where people are really afraid to use PayPal with a bank account, I have accepted money orders. Perhaps the seller would do that for you?

This makes sense, our solution--I'll use our checking account at the local bank, we have it only to deposit & cash checks w/o leaving town. dh approves of this and thinks I may be overly paranoid. Thanks for the input all--

Chelsea,

You can change back one time and one time only. If you get bumped up to the "preferred" account again they will not let you switch back. Also just a note if you sell on ebay you must have the cc accepted preferred account. I'm not trying to scare you or anything but this happened to me. When I first sold on ebay I wouldn't take paypal credit cards and it was fine. Then I didn't sell anything on ebay for about a year and the rules changed. I didn't notice and went and sold something and I had my account was changed to the preferred. Since I had once changed it down to the personal after closing my business they wouldn't change it back again and the only way I could get a personal account again was to close the first account and open a new paypal account and start all over (had to wait for all the mini deposits to come into the accounts etc. to become verified)

HTH

I went and opened a separate bank account to connect to Paypal. I mainly use it for buying/selling curriculum and keep a very small balance in it. And no, I am not a dealer; I just like to buy my school supplies used when I can. I love the convenience of Paypal, and I feel better knowing that it is not connected to my "real" checking account.

I've also understood (although it was about six months ago...so I don't know if the information is up-to-date) that some sellers use one email address for "cash" transfers and a different one for "fee based and/or credit card" ones so they don't incur fees on cash type transfers.
Just a thought!

I have two pp accts, one for premium and another for funded. They have to be linked to different bank accts so one is out of savings.

I have often thought I should move my account to the preferred during the season of the year when I'm selling my school books and then going back to using the bank account the other times of the year. I have not checked into it, so I was not aware that there is no going back (except for that one time)!! Thank you for sharing that.

Non-cc card payments can be a pain, I know... especially when it takes 3-5 days for a transaction to clear, if a person doesn't have money in the paypal account. But it is still a quicker way buy and sell, I think.

Can someone explain... when a person has a preferred account, can they be set up with a credit card AND a bank account, so that they can easily purchase something either way?

Yes, you can have more than one account linked to your PayPal account so you can choose which the funds are removed from (credit card, checking, savings, etc...). I would think that you could then pay for something out of checking or savings to a person who does not accept PayPal cc payments. You'd have to check with PayPal to be sure.

If you and your husband have separate PayPal accounts, you cannot both link to the same bank or credit card accounts.

Pay Pal will now let you accept up to 5 credit card transactions on your personal account without upgrading. You do have to pay an extra % though.

A non-cc payment can be an instant transfer even if the person doesn't have funds in their account. They do have to have their bank account linked to it with a credit card backing it up. If they don't have that, it will go by e-check with takes the 3 days.

I don't know about the preferred account, but you can have both a bank account and a credit card on file with a personal account. You can then choose which way you want to pay.

just wondering--

I prefer non-cc Pay Pal because I have a personal account. But I also want to be able to print a postage label from Pay Pal to ship the item. And the transaction is done right away. I will accept a money order but I really dislike having to hold an item hoping the money order is on its way.

Is it possible to somehow dump money into my paypal account without linking it to my bank account? For example, I've had refunds posted to my paypal account which showed up as credit. The next purchase I made, paypal used that credit first. Is there some way to add to that credit?

Paypal allows you to have two paypal accounts - one that accepts credit card payments and one that doesn't. You will need to have two email addresses. If someone really wants to pay with credit card, you can just have them use the paypal address that accepts credit card (and you can add the 2.9% to the price). If you don't already have two email addresses, you can easily get one for free from gmail, hotmail, etc.
