We began testing ds through the school system in December. We finished up in January and had our IEP meeting last week. Basically, the school system was offering their services to us. We were allowed to choose using their services or to walk away. Ds is thought to have Asperger's with other processing LDs.

Here is the arrangement we have come up with: Ds will go to the school from 9am-10:30am, M-F. He will be in the LD classroom that works on math and LA skills. There are 6-10 kids in the class. He will really be working from 9-10am, 3 days a week, with a half hour in the resource room or library, and twice a week, from 10-10:30, he will have a social skills class that is groupings of 3-4 HFAs.

I am really pleased with how this has worked out. I do think this is going to be a good thing for him. I'm excited for him! We'll still be hs'ing, I'll have over an hour alone to work with dd (for the first time ever!), and ds even knows one of the girls in the LD class already!

I'm still just feeling a little sad :( . I think it's an ideal arrangement for his needs and the school has been so accommodating! I feel guilty for feeling sad. I think it's just a control issue and I need to let go.

Has anyone else had an arrangement like this? If so, how did it work for you? Tomorrow is supposed to be his first day, but it could be a snow day:001_rolleyes:.

We did something similar for a year. Last year my DD was tested and qualified for an IEP for Speech Services and a Social Worker. She has an AS diagnosis. She attended for the second half of 4th and the first half of 5th grade, until this semester. She attended five days a week for a partial day for LA and usually three specials because they were in the middle of the LA block. This semester she is taking just Music and Art and trying an online class because she was having a hard time being patient in the classroom anymore. The positive of that is that they also increased her speech time. So, she buses two mornings a week for specials and to see the social worker and I take her one day a week for speech therapy. I think it has been a good arrangement. I have other DC so I am not alone. :) My DS4 also buses for mornings for speech therapy five days a week.

I do not yet know what the plans are for next year. She will be at the middle school. She will receive services, we just had her IEP meeting, and probably a few specials to keep her interactive. Whether she will again attend for LA will depend on how she does with her online class.

It does sound similar. I'm glad to hear it worked well for your family! I hope we'll have the same to report.

Ds had his first day today. He enjoyed himself! Apparently, they'll only be working on LA during the time he is there. Math comes up right when he leaves. We may have him stay for that at some point.....although, I found out he is significantly ahead of the rest of the class. They are doing 2nd-3rd grade math and ds is at grade level (4th) and above. They work in some areas he could use the extra the work, though. Story problems in particular :D.

In any event, his first day was a complete success. I did think it was pretty funny that thing he was MOST excited about was having a locker

My DD is ahead in math so that and the other subjects wouldn't work. She originally attended to work on writing and infered meaning in fiction. She is doing much better with those now. I'm glad your PS is accomodating.

My 14 year old daughter started middle school this year. She is in a full time special ed. room for cognitively impaired kids. School is 7:40-2:20 and she started out going 9am-noon. The elementary bus picked her up at 8:30 and brought her to school and then a van brought her home at 12:15.

That went very well and now she is staying until 2:20 and is back home on the bus at 3pm.

School has been very good for her.
