View Full Version : What would be a good book of the Bible for a 9yr to start reading independently?

I've been reading "Keeping Your Children's Hearts" by Steven and Teri Maxwell and it mentions in there an independent Bible reading time once they can read relatively well. My 9yo is an excellent reader and I'd like to get him started on this but am a little confused what might be a good book for him to start with that would be manageable. I'm leaning toward one of the gospels but thought I'd ask here first to see if you had any recommendations.

Thanks!

My daughter enjoyed Mark very much. She read it when she was 9. I think Matthew, Mark or Luke would be good starts. John is a little tougher, imo.

He already does a journal entry each day where he writes something and then draws a picture...I thought of doing something similar with his Bible reading.

Here is my idea:
Have a worksheet with a box for an optional drawing and then lines below to answer these questions:
1. Verses read
2. Favorite Verse (for him to write down his favorite verse from the selection read that day)
3. What these verses talked about:
4. How I can use what I learned in these verses:

Just wanted to give some more information on what I had in my mind.

The book of John or Psalms/Proverbs would be good.

BTW, I just learned about a new bible for this age range. It's called the NIrV bible. This looks really good if you like the NIV version. They have a sample of it on CBD.:001_smile:

Thanks! This is the children's Bible we currently have http://www.amazon.com/Lucados-Hermie-Friends-Bible-Lucado/dp/1400304954
and I've been pretty pleased with the translation so far. But thanks for the recommendation!

I second the gospels. Another route I've taken with my 9 year old is to have him read a chapter out of the Vos Story Bible, then read the corresponding chapter(s) from the bible itself. That way, he reads an easier version of the story and is prepared for the slightly more difficult wording from the text itself.

it is exciting with lots of action to hold his attention.

that would give him a good overview of New Testament chronology.

Historical narratives are a *great* way to start independent Bible reading, because the story makes it more interesting.

I like the book of Mark because it is action-packed, and short enough for your child to be able to finish in a reasonable amount of time. Finishing a whole book of the Bible can be very exciting!

Those are packed with stories.
