I am using Smarr's Ancient set, so not quite the same.

The big thing I really like about using it is the daily schedule. I *NEED* this more than I can say.

There are some recall questions - very basic. I do have my DC fill in the answers so that one day when he is in college he'll have them. And, there are a few discussion questions which can be turned into essay topics.

Since we started the Iliad, I've also been adding in ideas from Heroes of the City of Man, and at this point in the year we both agree it adds a level of understanding that isn't in the Smarr Guides.

Basically, I think Smarr has been a great crutch for us this year. It keeps us moving forward, and it's easy to add to if you decide that you want to. (And, free, with Sparknotes.)

Oh, SMARR also did an excellent job teaching how to write a 5-paragraph literary essay (persuasive paper). Very to-the-point and nonsensical.

What is Heroes of the City of Man?

I do like having a daily schedule.

You can look at Heroes here (http://www.amazon.com/Heroes-City-Man-Christian-Literature/dp/1885767552/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1265640142&sr=8-1).

So far we have used it for The Iliad, and we're using it now for The Odyssey. It really helps explain how certain themes are developed throughout these incredibly long and sometimes wandering books. It also divides the books into sections, with specific questions for each section.

Things I liked about it -
read whole books which ds enjoyed, about 8 essays written for the whole year, easy to use with schedule/guideline, some writing instruction. Essays were worked on after 2 pieces read and the student had a choice which one to write about. I thought that was good because though you may have enjoyed the book, you don't always have something earth shattering to write about it. Sometimes it is nice to just read a book and talk about it. I have continued that option with our literature studies.
