I have decided to take a year and cover geography before my oldest take Omnibus I, mostly because the rest of her schedule is packed and we are moving. I will use the BJU Geography text and Mapping the World by Heart for her. The 5th grader will use Mapping, too, but I would like some sort of text for her, or maybe a program that would have activities the older dd could do, too. I will also have a 1st grader who needs a year of geography before he starts the VP history sequence for 2nd grade. I already have a state study in mind, so something with a world history focus would be great. (Oh, and no MFW.)

I would love some recommendation of what you all have used and found effective for geography for upper elementary and lower elementary.

TIA!! :001_smile:

Beautiful Feet Geography using the Holling C. Holling books? We had so much fun with that program a few years ago, that my dc have requested that we do it again this year. They can't wait! There's a map pack that you buy to go with it and the maps turn out so beautiful. It's a kind of unit study incorporating some science and history as well if you want it to be.

Also, we use Trail Guide to World Geography and really like it as well. I'm not sure what you're looking for, but, BFG is mostly US geography with one book on world geography (Seabird).

Angela,

Unfortunately, I don't have a recommendation for a text for upper or lower grammar. After reading your post, though, I wanted to pop in and tell you how much I enjoyed our year of Geography. We also used MTWBH and I framed the keepsake maps. Just wishing you well for next year. :001_smile:

I think you could probably do Runkle with your 5th grader, if you skipped some of the harder stuff (which your 7th grader could do). But here are some links for you that might give you more ideas--these are sites I've bookmarked.

Country Lapbook (http://www.homeschoolhelperonline.com/lapbooks/country.htm)

Alternative to Sonlight Eastern Hemisphere (http://www.geocities.com/wholeheartorganics/EasternHemisphere.html)

Map resources (http://www.worldatlas.com/aatlas/world.htm)
