I'm buying books for History and I'm trying to determine which is the best version of these two books to get. I want them for my son who is not a great reader - reading about the fifth grade level. But it needs to be interesting, with lots of suspense and as little detail/descriptive language as possible.

Howard Pyle, HOWARD PYLE, HOWARD PYLE!!!!

Make sure you get written AND illustrated by Howard Pyle.

We like to copy the illustrations and take turns coloring and reading aloud.

I agree; the Howard Pyle versions are my favorite too.

We found one we liked at the library. It's King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table Retold by Emma Gelders Sterne and Barbara Lindsay. It's a Golden Illustrated Classic. Both of my children are enjoying it very much. I don't think it speaks down to them at all, yet it's understandable to them.

Our favorite Robin Hood is by Sarah Hayes (http://www.amazon.com/Robin-Hood-Sarah-Hayes/dp/0805012060/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1206327635&sr=1-3). (OOP, but available very inexpensively.)

My middle school age kids also liked Pyle (http://www.amazon.com/Merry-Adventures-Robin-Hood/dp/0979170214/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1206327455&sr=1-11) and Green's (http://www.amazon.com/Adventures-Robin-Hood-Puffin-Classics/dp/0140367004/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1206327455&sr=1-1) adaptations, but the Hayes one still holds a special place in their hearts.

If you like Sutcliff's Black Ships Before Troy and/or Lively's In Search of a Homeland, then you'll also love Molly Perham's King Arthur and the Legends of Camelot. (http://www.amazon.com/Arthur-Legends-Camelot-Kestrel-Picture/dp/0670849901/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1206327729&sr=1-1)

Our second favorite is Stories of King Arthur and His Knights (http://www.amazon.com/Stories-King-Arthur-His-Knights/dp/0192745107/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1206327746&sr=1-2) by Picard.

Roger Lancelyn Green's adaptations are always enjoyable - though I do not feel they capture the flavor of the originals.

A Boy's King Arthur (http://www.amazon.com/Boys-Arthur-Dover-Storybooks-Children/dp/0486448002/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1206327706&sr=1-9) and Pyle's adaptations (here's one volume (http://www.amazon.com/Story-Arthur-Knights-Signet-Classics/dp/0451530241/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1206327706&sr=1-2), there are several!) are fun, but sometimes the words get in the way of the story, imho... though we are happy to own them!
