View Full Version : Anyone make their own sno-cones?

After the kids went to bed, I was sitting here on the couch last night trying to decide if my supper was going to come back up or not, and feeling very miserable indeed. I decided to check the boards and was reading a thread (dueling eggs?) when someone mentioned sno-cones.

I hadn't had a sno-cone since I was about 15. I think it was at the roller rink.

To no one in particular, I mused how nice it would be to have a sno-cone. "What flavor?" asked DH.

Never mind that our ice cube trays were sitting on the counter, empty. He went and found a bag of ice from the depths of our chest freezer, threw some in the blender, and then poured this concoction made of strawberry jam, water, and an obscene amount of sugar over it. I think I'm going to be able to survive this pregnancy through the summer.

I made him promise not to tell the kids. It is going to be our little secret that Daddy can make such things. I had no idea.

Does anyone have an official sno-cone maker? Not one of those cheap Snoopy turn-the-crank things my friend had in second grade, but a fast one. The blender was ok, but there were a few big chunks.

Any good syrup recipes? Anything "healthy" enough to eat every day?

Oh, and my tummy felt SO MUCH BETTER by the time I had finished my cup. The extra syrup is in a cup in the frig so he can make another for me tonight. He didn't even try it last night. All for me. :tongue_smilie:

Yes, we have gone through several ice shavers- it's a totally different texture than crushed ice. I survived three pregnancies with plain shaved ice and water. Mmmmmmm....

Recommendations? Any particular brand or feature you especially like?

I like the electric ones, vs. the ones you crank by hand. :D I think we usually go with Rival, but that's because that's what is cheap and what is sold in Wal-Mart and Target, :)

We have the electric ice shaver for sno-cones and buy the syrup and cones from Target. We are addicted here. And, if I really want a flash-back, I make one, pack it very well, add the syrup, repack so it is super tight and then deep freeze. A day later, the are just like the ones the icecream truck sells in the plastic wrap! YUM

OK, it's not "healthy", but it got me through this pregnancy! Tampico in the blender w/ ice - will drop a pregnant woman's body temperature by a good 20 degrees in the heat of summer. :) Good, good stuff.

We've found, though, that it works quite well w/ regular OJ, any juice, lemonade, flat soda (ok, I was desperate at that point - but it wasn't bad). DH would come home at the end of a hot-hot day, lift his eyebrows at me and whisper, "Want a blend?" Ohhhh, baby! You know it! And we'd relax on the porch with our big glasses of icy refreshment.

I would make fruit smoothies daily and had one every night after work. They were the only thing that would pick me up and get me going for the rest of the evening.

We have a Black & Decker Ergo chopper. I don't know if they still sell them. It grinds up ice cubes really fine. Dd sprinkles some Stevita Stevia Sweet in and gives a final push. Super easy, no mess, and no sugar!

My dh's secret (not-so-secret?) dream is to one day own his own snoball business, so for his birthday we surprised him with a home ice shaver from Hamilton Beach. We also splurged and bought a few of our favorite flavor syrups from a snoball supply company online. They are a little pricey but less expensive than going out for snow cones all summer!
