Do you also use separate spelling/vocabulary/grammar curricula, or is LLATL enough by itself? I really want to add in something structured for literature, but I'm happy with what we're using for spelling/vocabulary/grammar. Would it be overkill to use all these?

Hi. This is my first post on this site.:hurray:

I have used LLATL for 4 years now. I have always supplemented with spelling and grammar, we use R&S. We do all the exercises in LLATL, but it is very light in spelling. We enjoy LLATL and will continue to use it through high school.

It is good either way. It wouldn't be too much to supplement, but some children need no supplementation if you didn't want to add other things. You should be fine with adding. :001_smile:

My 6th and 7th graders do other dictation during the week for extra spelling practice.
We have also added Analytical Grammar for 7th, but the 6th grader doesn't do any extra grammar. They also do written narrations on top of the writing provided in LLATL.

we've been using LLATL for about 8 years now. I don't supplement anything until 4th grade when I introduce Ridgewood Grammar. RG is a series of 3 books that is straight forward, no frills, grammar drills. We use that through
6th grade.

In 6th grade we add Writing Strands 3. It works really well for us and is a good fit with LLATL and RG (the last book). Up until then, for writing, we are doing copywork, dictation, narration, and daily journaling. Also, in LLATL there are mini-units for writing reports, poetry, newpaper, and journal writing that is gearing us up for WS3.

For spelling, I haven't had to supplement for my dds because they really are natural spellers. They just get it. We've gone over some of the more commonly misspelled words, but, that's about it. For my ds9, that is not the case. I use the spelling in LLATL, and that's actually good, but, he is such a bad speller, that we are supplementing with Spelling Power starting next year. I wouldn't worry about it, except that he really needs the work.

As far as literature is concerned, we don't add anything else until 7th grade when we add Lightning Literature, which is also a great match for LLATL. We stop using LLATL after 8th grade (the Gray book) because after that, I prefer LL instead of their literature.

Hope this helps!
