advance candy gobbling! Surely I am not the only person to purloin purchased treats?

I'm on a low carb diet. So no candy for me. Candy doesn't really tempt me though.

Our kids got mostly books and videos in their Easter bags. The tiny amount of candy they got didn't include chocolate or anything, so it was perfectly safe! :)

I bought candy for myself, so I had no problem staying out of the kids' candy. :Angel_anim:

Nothing to purloin here.....not one single chocolate egg has wormed its way into my home. I am such a sugar-holic, and I see that happening in my kids so I work very hard to not bring it into the house. So I simply never found time to go basket shopping....the kids got things that I ordered online or that I already had in my stash (which is ridiculously huge anyway, I can't resist educational sales either, but that addiction I am not trying to eliminate, just temper).

I fear leaving the house today however as I fear that everywhere we go there will candy screaming at us.

My hats off to you ladies (and your kids) who can have the stuff in the house without eating the whole bag in one sitting! :tongue_smilie:

My kids and DH like American chocolate. I don't. So they got about 1/2 of what I bought in their baskets, and I got to stay on my Weight Watchers diet. I don't know what I'm going to do with the other 1/2.

I didn't buy candy I like this time. No Nerds, Robin Eggs, Pop Rocks, Boston Baked Beans, SweeTarts, Bit-O-Honey, Necco Wafers, Payday, Butterfinger, or Junior Mints made it into the kids' baskets.

I feel simultaneously virtuous and deprived.

These were a $1 a bag yesterday... so we got some extra. :ack2:

Nah, there was still plenty enough so that I felt they'd never miss the little I took, LOL.....

I took the easy way out of this dilemma... I don't buy any Easter candy. My mom does a big egg hunt for the kids and all their candy presents come from that. So there were no treats for me to eat BECAUSE I definately would have eaten them.

I bought each of my kids a chocolate bunny, and a bunch of small toys. No candy for stealing.

This is our second year with out baskets :crying: Where my babies went I know not because now they are giants. Anyway we did fill plastic eggs for a church hunt and both I and the gentle giants repeatedly purloined purchased treats :D and felt nary a pain of guilt although my pants tell me I should

Since there's not a lot of vegan-friendly candy commercially available, and what is out there tends to be very expensive and not necessarily any good, my kids have never gotten a lot of candy in their baskets. And most of what they do get, I make.

I'm pretty much uninterested in the sugar-free LifeSavers, and the fudge didn't get made until after my son went to bed last night. I did make a little extra for myself, but I honestly forgot it was in the 'fridge until just a few minutes ago.

Sigh.

My daughter's basket had to go by mail this year, so we kept it small. She got a silly T-shirt and a plush guinea pig and plastic eggs filled with LifeSavers and (the college student's favorite) cash. She seemed most excited about the two loaves of home-made bread I sent along, though.

My son seemed quite happy with his basket, too. He got plastic eggs filled with LifeSavers and fudge and (smaller amounts of) cash, along with a new card game and a DVD he's been wanting.

Sometimes I look longingly at the candy in the aisles before various holidays and think how much easier and cheaper it would be if only I could just buy a few bags and be done. But we've been doing things our way for long enough now that I can't really imagine going back.

And now, if you'll all excuse me, I'm going to go eat some fudge.

Would you explain what vegan-friendly candy is, please? Thank a lot.

Vegan = a person who consumes no animal-derived products

It's not quite as clear-cut as that makes it sound, because there is a certain amount of individual variation in where, exactly you draw the line.

One example: We do allow small quantities of honey occasionally, although we try to avoid it. Other vegans don't use honey at all.

So, any candy that includes any dairy products is off our list. (That means most chocolate is out.) Also, much of the sugar refined in the U.S. undergoes a process that involves filtering the sugar through charcoal, much of which is derived from animal bones. Consequently, in order to be on the safe side, we generall avoid any candy that does not specify it is made with vegan-friendly or at least organic sugar. In practice, this means that we purchase only specific brands I have researched and assured myself are acceptable. And those tend to be available only at health food and specialty stores, with often so-so quality and high prices.

Hope that's clear!

I was good this year. We are doing weight-watchers so there will be no pilfering afterwards either.:001_smile:
