Dd was given a 100-piece cookie cutter set for her birthday and for the first time in my life, I've started to bake! We've tried the recipe on the box a few times, but now need something else. What's your favourite cookie recipe?

Simple sugar cookie recipe....but heavens it's sweet and wonderful:

1 pound of butter (use butter not margarine for best flavor), room temp
2 cups sugar
3 eggs
5 cups of flour
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon baking soda

Mix everything together, store in the fridge for about 2 hours so it's rollable.

Bake at 350.....6-10 minutes.......how long will depend on how thick you roll your cookies out, I watch until the edges just barely brown.

Store in covered container. The recipe as is will make crisp sugar cookies. If you prefer soft sugar cookies then put a damp paper towel in the container with the sugars (or one of those disks you put in a brown sugar container).

My kids love these and will eat them any time.

Gingerbread People

1.5 c dark molasses
1 c brown sugar
2/3 c cold water
1/3 c shortening
7 c all-purpose flour
2 t baking soda
1 t salt
1 t ground allspice
2 t ground ginger
1 t ground cloves
1 t ground cinnamon

Mix molasses, brown sugar, water, & shortening. Mix in remaining ingredients. Cover and refrigerate for 2 hrs.

Roll 1/4" thick, 2" apart on lightly greased cookie sheet, bake at 350 for 10-12 minutes until no indentation remains when touched, decorate with frosting.

For Gingerbread Cookies, decrease flour to 6 cups, roll dough 1/2" thick, 1.5" apart on cookie sheet, bake 15 minutes.

I did not leave out the eggs -- there are none in this recipe.

Yield: 2.5 dozen 2.5" cookies. I can't vouch for that because we use big cookie cutters.
