..through high school? How long did each course take? Were there any major challenges? Would you use it again?

Sorry about all the questions, but I have a dd finishing Saxon Alg 1(13 9th grade) with DIVE CD's. She is doing fine, and loves math.
I(she's not) am getting a little nervous about the upper levels, and wondering if it is really "doable" at home with the DIVE CD's or if we should switch her to a class environment.

Most of the co-ops don't use Saxon,so she would have to transition, and probably take a separate geometry course. Ugh! :confused1: I just want her to have what she needs mathematically, since she wants to major in engineering.

Any thoughts, or insight would be greatly appreciated.

..through high school? How long did each course take? Were there any major challenges? Would you use it again? Our sons used Saxon all the way (through Advanced Math anyway). All of the books took one school year (9-ish months), with the exception of Advanced Math, which took our sons the better part of two school years (this is typical for all but the very strongest math students). I can't say for certain if we'd use Saxon again because there might be something else that has recently come along that might tempt us. But we were certainly satisfied with Saxon, and with DIVE, by they way.

My twins have also used Saxon all the way. For my kids it has been very good. My son who was already strong in Math, really jumped in and did well. My dd learned that she is much better at math than she thought she was.
Excellent series!

My oldest is using it all the way through. He is "comfortable" with the program and has no desire to change.

At this point, he's beyond my level, but he's doing well. (I do have a friend that's a current math teacher major that has offered to help him should he need help.)

I have schedules for Saxon (through Ad. Math. . .I'll be doing Calculus pretty soon), that you could look at to get an idea of how long each course takes. (On my blog under "schedules".)

Saxon all through high school here too. Both dc have used Saxon through the first half of Advanced Math using DIVE cds. Dd, who is in college now, transitioned just fine to pre-calc using the Larson book at the community college. A friend of my dc used Saxon through calc and transitioned to a computer sci major at college with no trouble at all. None of them supplemented geometry.

Admittedly, the Saxon approach doesn't work for everyone, but if it is working for you don't stress.:001_smile:

Our four youngest homeschooled kids used Saxon all the way through. They did not like it as much as I did, but the end result is that the boys got scholarships to USNA (Annapolis), and the 2 girls majored in astrophysics and chemistry. I wrote to Saxon once the boys got their appointments (this was 1996) and the president sent me a personal thank you letter as well as a full set of high school math books. I feel that they DID receive a great math education. Just my personal story.;)

My mother used Saxon all the way through (54 through Advanced Mathematics*) with my brother and sister & they all felt it was a marvelous experience.

Each course took a single year. They didn't have any problems... and they often looked forward to math lessons.

My mother also used Saxon with some of the students she tutored and felt it was invaluable, especially in helping them learn to think outside the box.

My mother also worked as an SAT tutor and, although she felt the best prep for the SAT was taking real SAT tests (from the booklets published by the College Board), she also felt that the thinking skills acquired by using Saxon gave students an advantage.

* My sister went to Interlochen Arts Academy for her senior year of high school, and took Calculus there. My brother took a few courses at the local high school over his last two years of high school, and Calculus was one of them.

My eldest did Saxon until she started taking classes part-time at a local college (she did her pre-calc there). She was extremely well prepared for her courses, and has been very successful. Saxon did well by her.

My son went through Calculus with Saxon. We did not use the Dive CD's, just had the solution manual. He did fine in college, graduating with an EE degree in May.

Thanks for all of your input regarding your Saxon math experiences.;) It has really put my mind at ease. We will continue with Saxon as long as things continue to go well.

I am considering getting a standby tutor, since we live close to a university.

Thanks again:001_smile:

I used it from fifth through Algebra II. For Geometry, I supplemented with the Teaching Co Geometry DVDs and a state end of the year exam from the internet.

My son took Business Math in 12th grade.

He used the Dive CDs for Alg 2, but I didn't think it was necessary until then. He did very well.
