My daughter will be in 4th next year; my son in 2nd. When I did the automated helper on sonlight it recommended buying 2 core programs. Can I do both w/ core 3 and get other readers for my son? Any suggestons? Thanks!

Are you going to buy the whole package (History, LA, Science)? Core 3 is the first Core were the readers go along with the history. You could use other bks but then you would need another LA program as well. If you are just using the history and not the LA, then you could easily find bks to fit his level and still use the history and read-aloud with both.

I did a 4th/1st grade combo this year- we did Core 3, WP AS 1, and are working into Core 4 as far as the civil war this summer. Then we'll jump to Core 7 for the big one, and COre 2 for the little.
It worked great. I read more books aloud, because I wanted little sis to hear them too. Big sis read them, then I read them aloud. I thought it would be "too much", but my older DD reads a TON, so she can do 2 weeks of scheduled reading in 3 days.
We LOVE SL now! Thats why we're going to Core 7, then 6, for 5th and 6th grades. After that, well, no more SL, unless they come out with some new stuff.

You could easily do core 3 and just get other readers for your son. The readers don't even really have to be on the same subject as what you are studying. He will get plenty out of the core without them. You could read the readers that come with Core 3 aloud for him.

Yes! You can use the readers that come with Core 3 (just the regular or the regular plus the advanced) for your daughter and purchase an additional set of readers for your son. For your son, you can choose from the Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3 or Grade 3-5 reader packages.

Well you have alot of choices . My guess she is going to be 10 . Soooo with that said . It depends really . Do you want to study American History first , or World History ?
If World History I would actually suggest the Core 1+2 condensed version . It can easily be adapted for ages 6-10 .
If you are wanting to do American History then I would go with Core 3 .

The Co-Spine of Core 3, Landmark History of the American People is listed in the SL catalog as a Read Aloud for grades 5 to adult. I would the text and love it but when I got to Core 3 my oldest was the only one who could handle it.
If your 2nd grader is excited about US history and has no problem with chapter books with few pictures, and older wordier texts than you will probably have no problem doing Core 3. If any of those things set up red flags for you then I would do Core 1+2 or Core 2 this year and Core 3 next year:
2008 Core 1+2 (2nd, 4th)
2009 Core 3 (3rd, 5th)
2010 Core 4 (4th, 6th)
2011 Core 5 (5th, 7th)
2012 Core 6 (6th, 8th)
2013 Core 7 (7th, 9th)
2014 Core 100 (8th, 10th)
2015 Core 300 (9th, 11th) Modify adult lit for 9th grader
2016 Core 400 (10th, 12th)
2017 Core 200 (11th)
2018 Core 530, repeat favorite or do extra science (12th)
Your oldest does drop an upper core (I drop 200 only because it would be least attractive to a secular college, you can drop what ever program was appropriate for your child's interest), but the way you are able to keep the kids together all through their hsing journey.
Blessings,
Heather

The administrators decide what the titles will be and at what post count they change over at. Then they show up automatically in the system based on how many posts you have made.

I didn't read the other responses, but thought I would add my 2 cents in anyway!:)
Last year, I did core 1 with my then 3rd grader and Kindergartener. I basically did the history, Bible, geography, and read alouds with both of them at the same time (plus my 6th grader sat in for it as well). I ordered each of them their own level of readers, even for my oldest. I just love having these books for them to read at my finger tips.
This year, I did the core 2 with my 4th and 1st grader and again, my 7th grader sat in (we also do Msytery of History for a little more history and hands on projects). I can't say enough about how much I love their read-alouds! So worth the money as far as I'm concerned! I also love how easy the Bible part is to do. For the first time in my 8 years of official homeschooling, Scripture has gotten read daily since I started with Sonlight (two years now).
So to answer your question, I would definitely combine a core for both of your children. It's very doable in my opinion and I've enjoyed it.
