My son loves the Apologia Science Astronomy book. We are going to be studying Earth Science next year but Apologia doesn't have an Earth Science text. Any Suggestions for Earth Science? I have a 6 yo, will be 7 next school yr that loves science. He reading level is anywhere between 3rd-5th grade.

Thanks

Try searching for meteorology and geology titles instead. I just finished collecting our earth science resources, but we're doing it from a secular perspective. Off the top of my head, the very most tempting Christian resources were --

Christian Kids Explore Earth and Space (http://www.christianbook.com/Christian/Books/product?item_no=427055&netp_id=388772&event=ESRCN&item_code=WW&view=details)
Gods Design Planet Earth and
God's Design Our Weather & Water (http://www.christianbook.com/Christian/Books/product?item_no=34584X&netp_id=450828&event=ESRCN&item_code=WW&view=details)

It doesn't have to be from a Christian point of view. We actually do both Christian and secular.

Okay. :) Well, the God's Design books are pretty well-written, like Apologia, but here's a list of the resources I've collected for my 8yo (who reads about 4-8 yrs ahead, like your boy).

- Earth Science Daybook from GreatSource: asfcinating tie-ins to everyday life, write-in worktext but with thought provoking exercises instead of inane regurgitation

- Dr. Art's Guide to Planet Earth: earth systems science, or, how meteorology and geology all interface with each other; not a text, just a really great living book

- Oak Meadow Earth Science: textbooky format w/ no pictures, but well-written text, good projects, and quite functional as a well-balanced spine

- everything by Jacqui Bailey: books on science topics in a comic book format

- TimeLife Student Library Planet Earth: another just plain book; laid out calmly and clearly like the younger Kingfisher books, but with deeper information like the more advanced Kingfisher books

I bought a book from R.E.A.L Science. I flesh it out with science encyclopedias, and some DK pocket's titles. There is a ton of experiments and hands on stuff. My son loves it. (He is 6). I also bought a lot of books about scientists, etc that he can read along with what we are doing.

And yes, oddly I had to search high and low for an earth science curriculum that I was happy with.

You might try looking at Power Basics Earth Space Science. My 6th grader--not advanced---handled it nicely so it could work well for your advanced 6 /7yo. My older son, gifted, would have enjoyed it as a 6yo. Rainbow Resource carries it; quite secular too. :-)

We really enjoyed this. With a basic plan of what you want to study, you can get books out of the library that are at whatever level you need. We also bought a few of the books that SWB recommended. The Science in a Nutshell Rock Origins kit was a good addition.

You can find weekly plans on-line or I have one that you can use. :001_smile:

WinterPromise has a science curriculum called Rock Around the Earth! It is listed as being for 3rd-6th grade. Their website is down for maintenance and some of the material on the website does not reflect the latest changes. Here is the link to the new catalog.
http://www.winterpromise.com/catalog.html

"Spend a year exploring the forces that shape the land. Rocks and minerals, gems and formations will
all be studied. Fantastic resources allow students to learn by observation and simple experiments.
This is an easy-to-complete program, designed to complement the comprehensive nature of our other programs.
Can be completed in 2-5 hours per week. The only consumable is #SCI2-03."

Here is the list of titles-

Geology Rocks!
Prospector’s Mystery Rock SCI2-03
Rocks, Gems & Minerals
Ring of Fire Double-Set Rock Kits
“Ring of Fire” Earth Science Lesson CD
Earth Science Activity Guide CD
“Ring of Fire” Rock Cycle Lesson CD
Rock Cycle Activity Guide CD
“Ring of Fire” Earthquakes Lesson CD

Optional Resources-
Earth Science DVD
Rock Cycle DVD

I know nothing about this program, but I saw it in the new catalog that I received last week. :001_smile:

I second the God's Design series books.

Also, Media Angels has a Geology unit study for around $15. We've used their Creation Science unit study and were highly impressed, recently purchased their Astronomy book as well.

For those ages, I love ScienceWorks "Geology." The whole book is online at the Evan Moor site. It is way, way fun!

I agree. This is a perfect book to use with that age. I also think that God's Design for Planet Earth would be a good one.

Another good book is: A Child's Geography by Ann VosKamp. (I'm not sure the author's name is spelled correctly and I don't have time to go look it up!). It is called a geography book, but it is totally earth science. It is a LOT like the Apologia series. It comes with a CD of printable stuff for notebooking, plus ideas for experiments and projects. I'm using it next year and have read through it. It looks great!

In this thread I listed some of our favorite books from our collection (in several different areas of science - keep scrolling down, earth science is there!) and included some links to resources we've enjoyed from Home Science Tools.

You can follow the Amazon links to check reading level - there is a very wide span... my kids tend to like to get really complex, adult level material, page through picture books, and read things somewhere near their theoretical level.
(If you have more questions about anything, I can pull a book off the shelf and try to give you more information!)

I'll second this-especially if you enjoy Apologia elementary books. (This is actually the text that the author of Apologia recommends to use for earth science.) I just bought mine from timberdoodle.com for $25! :)
