Milk allergy and store bought bread

My niece is allergic to milk and my SIL is having trouble finding a sandwich bread with no milk product. I haven't looked myself lately, but back when my boys were allergic to milk and egg, there was a brand I used, I just can't remember which one. I told her I knew just where to ask!

Do they have a Whole Foods / Trader Joes / Harris Teeter near them?

I often can find special breads there.

My son is lactose-intolerant. I find it almost impossible to find bread with no milk product added. If she has a Great Harvest nearby, their white and their whole wheat breads are milk-free, and wonderfully soft, tasty, and nutritious. Otherwise the only other store-bought bread that is reliably milk-free is French bread (the long, fresh loaves), and there is virtually no nutrition in those.

We make whole wheat bread in our breadmaker and just replace the milk with water. It works just fine, tastes lovely, and is far cheaper and tastier than what is available in the store.

A lot of products today have allergy warnings and milk is sometimes listed. I think Sara Lee is milkless now as well as some store brands.

I also have a milk allergy and find that most whole/part/multi grain wheat breads do not have milk but they do like to sneak in whey when they can. You really have to check the packages.

This is tough because milk helps the texture of the bread so much--my dh only likes my bread if I add it. We've bought rice bread with no dairy before, but it's expensive so we avoid it. I recommend getting a bread maker if she doesn't have time to make it from scratch by hand as that's generally the easiest and most cost effective (if you buy in bulk, especially the yeast) way of getting milk/whey free bread.

Check out the Baker's Inn 100% Whole Wheat. There is another one I used to get back when nursing my dairy intolerant one, but for the life of me, can't remember which it was! I did a quick check of the one above and unless there is a name that I am unfamiliar with, it looked dairy free (but check it out thoroughly yourself). Also, just because one of a brand has it doesn't mean that all varieties in that brand have dairy.
I'll post if I remember which other one was dairy free.

My son is lactose intolerant, and I have had a hard time finding bread without milk. Baker's Inn brand is one that doesn't. They make different types, so you'll have to check the ingredients. My son eats "Honey White".

SaraLee Honey Wheat bread is the only one I can find at a "regular" store that doesnt contain milk. Hamburger Buns and Hot Dog buns are trickier. In fact, I cant find Hot Dog Buns. Sara Lee and others make a dairy free hamburger bun but I cant remember the name. Their Bagels are dairy free BUT only certain varieties. I cant find waffles and plan to buy a waffle maker soon. Bisquick is dairy free if she wants to make pancakes or biscuits with soy milk.
