I would like to have my 12yod study some challenging words to increase her vocabulary. What are some good curriculum sources for this?
Thanks.

Last year, BarbF recommended Vocabulary for Achievement... her girls have used this and done very, very well on the SAT verbals... she credited this vocabulary program. So, I checked it out and saw that Debra Bell recommends it, too... two great references! We are using the first book this year and we both like it very much! Not that easy to find You might have to order it from Debra Bell. I think it is published by the same people who publish Spelling Workout (it's one of those big school publishers... I can go pull the book down if you need specific info.. typing from bed with a bit of a stomach flu right now).
Anyhow, all that to say that I really, really, really like this program very much.

I only have 6 year old right now and we use Wordly Wise 2. I will be buying Wordly Wise 11 for me :)
You can check out the wordlist in each book for all the grades here (it's on the right hand side, click on"view sample pages") - you have to download the lists and you can choose which level you want to see.

The first is Building Thinking Skills Level 3 Verbal. The book is very good at helping a student learn about connotations and associations with different words. I generally have my dc do this in 7th grade. My 8th and 10th graders are using the AMSCO series -- Joy of Vocab for my 8th, then Vocab for the High School Student, Vocab for the College Bound (for my 10th). I've purchased the AMSCO books and answer key through Hewitt Homeschooling.

Listening to audio books more advanced than her reading abilities, as well as reading good literature, would help with this. My daughter enjoyed Spelling Workout G, which expands vocabulary, as a curriculum choice.

Lisa, I find this very helpful what you said. I was thinking of stopping Building Thinking Skills after level 2 and try something else. Now that you said this I am seriously rethinking the idea.
I am currently using Vocabulary Vines for vocabulary studies, but I think that I am doing overkill with vocabulary. My son is in Latina Christiana I. There is a lot of derivatives in this book. Now, I am wondering why did I purchase Vocabulary Vines in 4th grade. Maybe I won't need Science Vines in 7th grade if I use Building Thinking Skills Level 3? I don't know. I might get paranoid and do Science Vine just so that I don't feel like my son is missing something.:lurk5:

Lori, I have not been able to find any sample pages on line. I was wrong about the publisher. The publisher is Great Source (same publisher as Write Source series). I know you can order it from DebraBell.com, and I think that places like Barnes and Noble can get it... make sure you have the right isbn... then you can return it if you don't like it. They have two series - Grades 3-5, and Grades 6-12. I felt like my dd's vocabulary was pretty good at 6th grade and considered buying the 7th grade book, but when I saw the 6th grade book, I definitely started with that one. The vocabulary is meaty, and each lesson groups words together by context. You do study roots, etc, but one week's lessons will be about medical terms, another week's lesson will be about another them, that sort of thing. My dd loves these books and feels like she's learned a lot of interesting information. Better yet, she retains it... and I think that is attributed to the context teaching method. I havenot noticed that she has incorporated the vocabulary into her every day speech, but she does learn and understand the vocabulary, and understands where the words come from, etc.
I really like this series.. so much more than everything else I've looked at, including those recommended in TWTM (eek.. sorry SWB!) To me, the best program is the one that gets used and that the student learns from, and the whole presentation of this program is fantastic, much more engaging, etc.
Good luck finding it, though. I had to order from Debra Bell. Funny how everyone carries the Write Source books but not other handbooks/program by Great Source. They have several other series that look good, too.
