Did your family doctor give the test?
I think I need to get a TB skin test for a job.
Just wanted to know if this was regular protocol for beginning teachers.
~Thanks! fairymommy

I don't know about teachers but we had them as kids in school each year.

I had to have a complete physical.

I don't know what state you are in, but I just asked DH and he answered "no". They did not require a physical let alone a TB test.

It's gotta be a state thing--it wasn't required here.

I had to have that to teach piano in public schools, but that was in Ontario. I also needed it to be an MOA back before people went to school for it (and before they gave needles). Both times my family MD did it.

I started teaching public school in August. I had a lung x-ray, as I have been exposed to tb.

All the private schools I've taught at (3) required a TB test.

Yes. This was in Florida in the early 80's. My test was done at the health department.

We don't have to have any kind of physical or skin test here.

Yes, standard for the private schools here, and I am fairly certain the PS requires it as well.

In California it's required. In fact, a very pro-home schooling lawyer I knew (her sister home schooled all of her children) believed that according to the way the law was written, it was technically even required of home schooling parents (though just to be kept on file, not turned in). I didn't know anyone who actually *did* that, lol, and she didn't even necessarily recommend it -- it was just an observation.

Yes, I did. It was about 12 years ago in Delaware. I went to my regular doctor for the test and just submitted documentation.

I taught school in 2 states from 1992-1998. I never had to have a TB test.

I recently asked about obtaining a substitute teaching license (!!!!) here in KS, and learned that a TB test is required. Your Dr. or the local health dept. can do it.

Dh isn't sure how often but I think it is somewhere around every 5-6 years he has to have one as a condition of his teaching contract. It isn't a big deal and yes, he goes to his Doctor. The first time I think we didn't have insurance yet and we went to a clinic??

In NJ it's required for working with children at all. The employer always paid for it, not me.

Actually at some schools in Washington it is required (I taught both public and private schools so maybe it was the private school?). I test positive for TB (I was raised in Asia) and no one told me for 10 years that it is BAD for me to get the TB test. You can just call your Dr. and ask them to schedule the test for you at the lab or to have just a "nurse visit" (you shouldn't have to pay for an actual Dr's office visit).

In California, I had to get it plus a very extensive physical. That was 13 years ago though.

It's a very common requirement when you're going to be working with groups of children. It's pretty straightforward. I had to have it done when I was staying with my mom for more than a month last summer, because she's a foster parent. I just had it done at a pharmacy, cost ten dollars I think.
