Hi,
I'm the person that did the last major revamp on the WTM abbreviations page (with help from Tim, of course!), but I started my own page soon thereafter because (at the time at least) Tim was unable to add new abbreviations without getting the page re-reviewed, which meant that the page was only updated infrequently. Since then, I also went through mine and added links, which I think has been very helpful for people. So, if you'd like to pull what I have into the site's page, I'm A-OK with having my page become obsolete!
http://home.tx.rr.com/cnd/herweb/home_school_abbreviations.htm
p.s. I intentionally did not include generic internet abbreviations when I revamped the WTM abbreviations page because there are already *so* *many* sites which have these and there are *so* *many* abbreviations. My thinking was that the WTM page should focus on its area of expertise. YMMV, of course! ;)

Was it used as a home schooling term or can you tell from the context? Next time that you see it, ask the person who used it what it means -- I don't think anyone has been anything but kind about answering that type of question here.
And then let me know what they said and if there is an associated web site. ;)

All I have on my Home School Abbreviations (http://home.tx.rr.com/cnd/herweb/home_school_abbreviations.htm) page is "Latin-Centered Curriculum" (http://www.latincentered.com/) (note that these are both links). If anyone has a succinct description to add to the definition, let me know and I'll add it.

These abbreviations (dear son, dear daughter, dear husband) are general internet abbreviations, so they are not included in the home school abbreviations list. I searched several of the sites given in the Internet Abbreviations list and was a little surprised to find that these particular abbreviations did not rank very high on several of the sites. I might need to re-order the list on my page to give preference to the non-technical sites.
HTH (hope this helps),

From http://mysite.verizon.net/violetweb/home_school_abbreviations.htm:
AG "Analytical Grammar (http://www.analyticalgrammar.com/)" or "activity guide"
Given the context, probably "activity guide", as in the SOTW activity guide that is available.

Thank you for the compliment! I hope that you have found the abbreviations list useful.
Googling around, DVT in connection with Lial seems to be "Digital Video Tutor". However, this term does not seem to be used on www.lialalgebra.com. Instead, that site seems to use "Interactive Math". I don't know if that's just a change in terminology (e.g. Lial used to use "DVT") or if it is two different things. I'll put Digital Video Tutor on my page for now ... let me know if you find something else.

I added MC and CQLA -- thanks!
I've figured out that MC in this context stands for Meaningful Composition. It's by the people who do CQLA but is just the composition program broken out to stand alone.
Still haven't figured out the W&M Utopia!

Still haven't figured out the W&M Utopia!
I have finally found it! :hurray:
It is the College of William & Mary's Center for Gifted Education! W&M = William & Mary. Apparently, the Center for Gifted Education has all kinds of courses and curriculum targeted at the gifted K-12 student, and Utopia is one of the middle school language arts programs.

BTW, I also added AiG & AIG, which I had noticed while scanning through the messages in this thread. As far as I am aware, the only abbreviation that has been posted that hasn't been decrypted is TOW. Please let me know if you know that one or if I have missed any others.

I got stumped by "FM of Modern Times" today. Turns out "FM" was short for "Famous Men," which I may have been able to put together if it had been "FM of Rome" (one of the original John Haaren titles).
I have no idea who you would call the publisher for this series, since the original books have long been in public domain and are reprinted by loads of people. Greenleaf Guides and Memoria Press (at the least) each put out their own versions of newer "Famous Men" titles. It's kind of a mess.
But you may still want to add this, since I know it's a fairly popular resource.

Here's how I worded it:
"Famous Men" of [Greece, Rome, the Middle Ages, Modern Times], written by John H. Haaren and A. B. Polan. This series is in the public domain and is available through various publishers such as Greenleaf Press (http://www.greenleafpress.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=50), Memoria Press (http://www.memoriapress.com/descriptions/index_classical.htm), and Yesterday's Classics (http://www.yesterdaysclassics.com/).

I added the following to my abbreviations page (link in my sig):
"Comprehensive School Mathematics Program (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comprehensive_School_Mathematics_Program)" may refer to either the name of a project that was responsible for developing curriculum materials or for the K-6 mathematics curriculum (http://ceure.buffalostate.edu/%7Ecsmp/) developed by that project.

I have to admit, the abbreviations are annoying me now. I'm not a "newbie" to homeschooling, I'm into our 2nd year... I can't even count the number of hours I've spent researching over the past 2 years, and the one thing that slows me down is the abbreviations. You only 'get' an abbreviation if you are already using that program, or know about it. So how about helping out and giving us a few more letters....

I can definitely empathize! In my own writing, I *try* to use the full name at least once and then switch to abbreviations (sort of like using pronouns). Over time, though, I think people in a group can get out of that habit since "everyone" knows what they mean. I'm just trying to fill in the gap. ;)

I forgot to mention in my reply to Wendy that I am happy to add links for curiculum that don't have abbreviations. I got to thinking that the links might be encouraging an unnecessary proliferation of abbreviations. ;)
