Hands down my favorite is Paul Johnson's A History of the American People. I also like A Patriot's History of the United States. Also, reading through Johnson's book while simultaneously watching (or listening to) the Teaching Company's course on Unites States history is excellent!

I will have to check that one out. Thank you!

My then 10th grader used American Pageant for an out of the home AP US History class. She enjoyed the book (though be forewarned that it is a tome!).

My favorite supplement is Joy Hakim's History of the U.S. My son hates reading of any kind, especially history, but he actually enjoys these books. There's alot of information (and pictures) that you don't see in typical history texts.

We are using A History of the United States by Boorstin. Ds is my history kid and he is really enjoying this book. Jean in Wisc has been recommending this text here for a while now, so we thought we'd give it a try and are glad we did. The depth of the writing is good and there are enough pictures, maps, primary sources, and time lines. I bought it used through the Amazon community. I also purchased the teacher's edition to have the answers to the in-text questions.

I also have liked using Paul Johnson's A History of the American People. It's my favorite book for teaching high school level American history.
