We haven't hardly done any copywork, or writing for that matter, this year. I would like to start dictation with my dd8 but I'm not sure if she's ready. We haven't worked on spelling much either so I'm not sure if she's ready for dictation. I don't want her to fall even farther behind. How can I get her up to speed? Any advice would be greatly appreciated

first and consistent weekly spelling.

She could do some dictation that is really simple. You could start with a Bible verse or a verse from a short poem. You have her copywork that verse everyday and talk with her about the different things in it you want her to notice: spelling words, phonics rules, capitalization rules, punctuation, grammar (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, etc), and things like that. At the end of the week, after she's copied it at least 4 times, you could dictate it to her and see how she does.

I wouldn't push the dictation. She won't fall behind if you start right now with copywork and spelling. If you push the dictation before she's ready, it could make her and you frustrated and that could be a problem later on.

It approaches spelling in an incremental way, and includes some kid friendly / mom/ teacher friendly cards to review vocabulary, phonograms and spelling rules. The set also comes with letter tiles that your dc can use to spell the words as they are learning to write them. Each lesson also includes short sentences for dictation; the sentences increase in length in later chapters.

Although the sentences are not great literature's any stretch of the imagination :), they do include your dc's spelling words for the week, which is a nice way to review them, use them in context, practice handwriting, and learn dictation skills.

My ds 8 also copies poetry, verses form Scripture, and sentences from literature.

Great advice! This is kind of what I was thinking myself but needed to hear that it's okay to wait before we start dictation! Thansk

This looks like a great program. I'll have to look into it some more. Thanks for the info!

I just posted some copywork/dictation pages that I created for my dd7. They are on my blog on the right hand side and free to download.
We are in the same boat - We too have not done much copywork or dication. I am using the Elson readers as my source and reading the story and my dd will complete the narration then do the first day of copywork (coping under the sentence... the next day she will copy from the model above ... and the last day she would do dication (you can just have your child to it as copywork again) but on all the days we are working our focus on how the sentence is build, the spelling and grammar..... when we do the dictation part it is not a "test" but I will help her work through it..... Make sense?

Anyhow, I just added these pages last night and I'm working on more for the elson reader book 2...... The Elson reader is available through google library if you want to read the stories too. the link is provided on the sheets....

If you like them and plan to use them, please let me know and I will keep added the downloads to my blog.....

Good luck!
Kate

I'm not understanding your question..... The lines should be solid on top and bottom and dotted in the middle (like handwriting paper)....

I am choosing sentences that will be "doable" for my dd. Sentences that I can use to point out different spellings and rules (similiar to Simply Spelling- which we will use in the fall (http://shoelacebooks.ecrater.com/product.php?pid=1490908)), with other words used in the sentence, I know she can spell and that I can show her the reasons for punctuation (that is another reason why I am reading the stories to her- so she can associate the way it is read in the story to the way it is written)

I added the narration page as a "bonus" as we have not done many and I want to work with her on this over the summer to prepare her for the fall school year.

Does that help or can you explain differently your question so I can answer?:001_smile:
Thanks,
Kate

Maybe it didn't download right let me try again. When I opened it the area where you write was black with very thin white lines inbetween.

I don't know why but I just tried printing them and the space where you are suppose to write printed black! Hmm I'm not sure either. Could you email them to me? thanks

My dd is 7. We started using Hannah Wilson's Word Attack a few months ago. It has been great for my dd. It includes spelling one syllable words, rules, and dictation. The dictation sentences are very easy and have been just what my dd needed to get started with dictation.

I also found some dictation books on google books. I am thinking about using some of them when we finish Word Attack. If that doesn't work well then I will switch to Simply Spelling.

Kate in MD - I loved your copywork and dictation pages as well as the Elson readers. I plan to use those as well.
