I have just finished my traditional annual patting-of-myself-on-the-back excercise of adding up how much I'm spending on curriculum materials and comparing it to various other options. It will be a relatively expensive year for us, but I'm still feeling good.

It looks like the grand total will come to $407.94. That includes what I've already spent at bargain bookstores and using B&N coupons and so on and what is currently sitting on my wish lists at Rainbow Resources, B&N and Book Depository. It will cover my son for:

History/Literature
English
Science
Spanish
Latin
Greek
Logic (informal)

He will be using free online resources for:

Math
Geography
Art

All in all, I feel pretty good about it.

How's everyone else doing, budget-wise?

You're doing great!!

I have one son and I'm trying to keep in between 600.00 -700.00. :001_huh: I am ordering a lot of reference books and at least two years of science that I have to put together. I'll probably spend another 100.00 throughout the year on goodies and supplies.

Our budget is tight, but dh is a carpenter and understands the value of investing in the right tools. I keep reminding myself it's still cheaper than private school.

I'm actually under-budger right now because of the clearance sale at Beth's Bookshop (no affiliation) and the double discounts at R&S I found this month. Of course, I will use this money when we go to the Homeschool Book Fair in May...

That's great. How old is he and what is he using? What's killing me these days is science as my oldest heads toward high school. But it's worth it to us.

looks like between $600-$700. but i tell myself that's for 3 kids (7yo, 6yo twins) so it's really not so bad! :auto:

I run about $800/year for two including standardized testing and supplies, but not including co-op and sports.

About $1000 for materials here (3 children)
Piano Lessons run us $200 a month.
Swimming will run us about $400 this year (lessons, team fees)
Montly K12 fees of $75 for on-line access...

Then, there's testing, and additional materials we may need (printer paper, inks, etc.). But, all-in-all, our budget is pretty good. Still couldn't afford a private school that would get them the education they are having for anything close to our budget.

He's 10 (just this month) and will be using the following:

History/Literature - Appropriate sections of the Parragon Atlas of World History as a spine, with a nice, long reading list (about 30 books). He'll read the appropriate stories on the Child's History of the World CD and watch lots of DVDs from Netflix.

English - Galore Park English Prep Book 2

Science - The Story of Science: Aristotle Leads the Way as the primary spine, plus the Science of the Past series and other books about ancient science. For hands-on stuff, he can play around with Ancient Science: 40 Time-Traveling, World-Exploring, History-Making Activities for Kids.

Spanish - Continuing with The Learnables, he'll be doing the Grammar Enhancement next year.

Latin - Galore Park Latin Prep Book 1, with workbooks.

Greek - Eucleides' World (We're just dabbling next year.)

Logic (informal) - Giant Book of Mensa Critical Thinking Puzzles (He's already finished the Dandy Lion/Logic Liftoff series, and I haven't found anything I like that doesn't look like just more of same.)

Math - He's already started working slowly through the open access University of California College Prep Algebra One and will likely finish about the first third this year. He'll pick up next year wherever we leave off.

Geography - Florida Virtual School middle school World Geography course.

Art - FLVS Orientation to Art

I know what you mean about the high school thing, though, Heather. Our expenses jumped a bunch the first year my daughter was doing a full high school curriculum.

I'm almost done buying for next year. So far I've spent about $800. I have four children, but my younger 2 will tag along with Core 6 with my dd 12, and I will add in younger books...I also have all books from Core 1 and 2, but I won't be following the schedule.
My estimate is another $250 and that will be it for '08-'09
