I see that there are teacher books and student books. I'm having a hard time imagining what would be in a teacher book - isn't spelling kinda straightforward? LOL. Is the Teacher book just the words in a non-consumable format, while the student book is pages to practice in? Any help in figuring out what to buy would be helpful. Thanks!

This is why I love this forum. Ninety percent of the time, when I come to post the question that has been floating around in my head, someone has already asked it :D So this is me, about this post :bigear: LOL!

Nope, you won't need the teacher's manual.

You don't really need the TM, but for some reason I always purchase it. I should really stop. For my first year homeschooling, it was a nice comfort to have the TM. Mathematics was my thing in school and I am the worlds worst speller. The TM does have a 3 day lesson plan and 5 lesson plan. And of course, it contains all of the answers.
I just love SW and so do my girls. It is amazing. They now spell better then me!

I bought the teacher manuals the first year we used it and never again (I've now used it for 7 years, 3 different kids). They're not necessary.

Okay - I will not be buying the TMs! I got the one for Saxon 3 and never use it, unless I'm really stuck on how to explain something, so I'm not a big TM fan to begin with . Thanks everyone for your input. I wish I had some rep points to spread around, but I've run out again. *sigh*

That happened to me with the HWT TM. Thanks for saving me $15! I spread some rep around :D

Thanks Melissa. :)
I am half brain-dead most of the time anyway, but I find them useful for Level E and up. Periodically there's a stumper that just isn't obvious to me. In fact, I had to pull out my Level F this morning for one that I couldn't figure out.
Depends on how "good" you are!

It's a pretty straightforward program. Dd and I discuss the phonics rule, after which she spends the week doing the workbook pages, writing the list in print and in cursive, and then she takes a test.

We are on the 3 day lesson plan.
Day 1:
My girls read the Spelling Tip & Spelling Words in Action.
Warm-up Quiz - written
Then they write the word(s) that they have misspelled 3 times each and complete the Spelling Practice page.
If they get a 100%, they complete the proofreading section and tomorrow, we move on to the next lesson.
Day 2:
My girls complete the last two pages in the section.
Day 3:
Spelling Test - oral
They write the word(s) that they have misspelled 5 times each.
I keep track of the words they misspell and repeat them in the next Spelling Test. We call them Blast From the Past Words. I have been lucky with this lesson plan. I had always thought that I would move to a five day plan once they started to struggle, but they are doing just fine so far.

I get the teacher guides. My main reason is for the sentences for spelling tests. I know, I know I could make up my own sentences, it just saves that little bit of brain power and I need all the extra I can get! Plus there have been the occasional exercises where I just did not get what they were looking for, lol, and have used it to look up an answer. Oh, and there are extra tests in there for each unit (not each chapter, each unit). Pretty sparse, but I don't really regret buying them.

Oh, see, I enjoy making up sentences that amuse me. :biggrinjester:

I get the TM's also.
I like the sentences - they are already thought out for me. Plus, on days when I can't get around to doing the spelling test, one of the other kids can read the sentences out loud for his brother's test.
Also, at the "Instant Replay" lessons, there are reproducible fill-in-the-bubble tests and usually a "fun" puzzle page. I like that my kids get experience taking a "standardized test" (fill in the bubble with the word that is spelled wrong), and the kids like the pages that have crossword puzzles and such. It's just something "extra" and "fun" for them to do.
But are they absolutely needed? No. You can certainly do SWO without the TM's. I, however, prefer to have them. JMO

What are rep points? I dropped in on this thread to see if I could help out with the spelling workout problem but seems several people already explained, but now I'm left wondering what rep points are.:glare:

Hello Paula,
Try this:

If that does work, you can go to the General Board and there is a sticky posted by Heather.
I hope that helps.
