The dog alarm goes off every morning. George begins his soliloquy around 8:30 and wraps it up 10 minutes later. I don't know who he's talking to or what he's saying, but it's not going to win him any awards. It's monotonous. It's expressionless. It's like a metronome. Woof. Woof. Woof. Woof. Woof.

He also performs at night when he hears a siren. That when he really cuts loose with a soulful howl. That's when he shows his vocal range and depth of emotion. The other dogs in the neighborhood are impressed... I can tell by the way they take up the theme. He has taught them all to get in touch with their inner wolves.

But for now there no expressiveness, no coloratura performance. Just

Woof.

Woof.

Woof.

Woof. . .

Sympathy for you here, but no insight, as my dog barks at leaves blowing across the yard at midnight. *sigh*

My dog howls a long, loud, mournful howl. Usually for no particular reason.

When she's cold, I understand and we fill her house with bedding. When we've slept in and not fed her I understand. When she hasn't seen us in a week because it's been -10 outside, I understand.

But, most of the time there is no discernable reason for her howling and it comes at all times of the day: midnight, 3 am, 2 pm, 8 am, whenever. :glare:

I know one set of our neighbors despises us because of it.

You could consider yourself lucky that it's not goats. I hear the goats from a bit down the road frequently. Everytime a dog barks, we hear baaaaa, baaaaaa, baaaaaa, aaaarrrgh!!!

A couple of cute "baaaas" followed by what sounds like someone screaming in frustration!:D

Selah.

It's always something, isn't it!
