Our 9yod seems to have dyslexia. She can read really well - above grade level and seems to comprehend and remember what she reads. But.... she has a lot of trouble with spelling and math. We have started using Sequential Spelling with her - which seems to work well as long as we use it every day. If we take a break, she forgets a lot of it. Math facts aren't sticking either, which, of course, makes math in general difficult. She doesn't seem to have trouble understanding the concepts of math, just the memorization of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. I have been giving her a blank multiplication table to fill out and then use during her lessons, hoping it would help her memorize her facts, but that doesn't seem to be helping. We are using Singapore Math, which doesn't give much fact practice.

Anyway, I have been trying to decide what the best method to use with her would be. I should mention that I have 5 additional students and a toddler to help and keep track of, so realistically I don't have a lot of extra time to spend with her.

Thanks much! :)

We did fact practice with flash cards every day before bed on and off for *years*. At 13, he now has the facts down.

I'm guessing that the multiplication table isn't helping because her problem isn't necessarily not knowing them exactly, it's not being able to *retrieve* them from memory automatically. So the practice needs to include the retrieval part, rather than just exposure (or in the case of filling in a multiplication table, skip counting).

She could try my online spelling lessons (http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Spelling/spellinglessonsl.html). If they move too fast, she could do the phonics lessons instead--they include all the spelling rules but move at a slower pace.

Also, many of my students like these charts, they find the logical nature and the percentages helpful:

I like the flashmaster for math fact practice, it is also something that can be done independently.

My dyslexic son benefited from using "Times Tales" to learn his multiplication facts. When I first saw it I rejected it because it does not help ME and the way I think, but it ended up being perfect for him. TimesTales uses symbols and stories to help cement the facts....totally not a help to me....left me scratching my head...but it helped my ds.

I've had good luck with RightStart math's games. My daughter is learning her addition facts using their card games (things like Go To the Dump etc..) I've been trying for a long time using flashcards with no luck.

I've been amazed at how well she's learned her facts just by playing the card games.

I will second the RS games. I tried flash cards, Calculadders and Flashmaster and none of those worked, but the RS games my kids enjoy and they remember their facts.

I downloaded a sample from Times Tales and she loves it! She is actually remembering the facts from the lesson - yay yay yay!!!! No blank looks when I quiz her on the problems - you can almost see her brain working to remember the story that goes along with it. I'll check out the games, too.

Thanks everyone.
