Following on from my wobble (http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4169&highlight=calvin+responsibility) about continuing to teach the boys as they get older, I tested Hobbes with the UK standardised tests a few weeks ago, and he did well. I just tested Calvin (reading, writing, maths and science) and he did great too. He tested into level 5, which is meant to be how a 13yo would do if taking that test (he's 11). He was above the 80th percentile, for his year and month age group, in all subjects. This included science, for which we follow a completely different curriculum.
So my mind is set at rest, although I did discover a few areas to work on. His mental maths could do with being a little faster and he needs practice with writing down monetary values in pounds and pence. He also practically stopped my heart by not knowing that the earth's rotation causes day and night, when he was asked in the first science exam. Then, after I had talked him through it, he made the same mistake on the second science exam! Oh well, he did fine overall and a little calm (!) explanation and drilling will get that point settled.
Thanks to all for your support. Please remind me of these results next time I panic.
