Following on from my wobble (http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4169&highlight=calvin+responsibility) about continuing to teach the boys as they get older, I tested Hobbes with the UK standardised tests a few weeks ago, and he did well. I just tested Calvin (reading, writing, maths and science) and he did great too. He tested into level 5, which is meant to be how a 13yo would do if taking that test (he's 11). He was above the 80th percentile, for his year and month age group, in all subjects. This included science, for which we follow a completely different curriculum.

So my mind is set at rest, although I did discover a few areas to work on. His mental maths could do with being a little faster and he needs practice with writing down monetary values in pounds and pence. He also practically stopped my heart by not knowing that the earth's rotation causes day and night, when he was asked in the first science exam. Then, after I had talked him through it, he made the same mistake on the second science exam! Oh well, he did fine overall and a little calm (!) explanation and drilling will get that point settled.

Thanks to all for your support. Please remind me of these results next time I panic.

Great! Again, I'm not surprised, but I'm very happy for you and Calvin. It sounds like this has been a good experience for you - your fears are put to rest but you also know what things to work on. :)

Great job, Laura, Calvin and Hobbes!!! Isn't it nice to have a little independent confirmation?! I'm so happy for you all!

Laura,

Well done!!

Where does one get the tests from? My dd will be going into Year 4 in the UK in September and I would like to make sure that she is ready.

Thanks!

Laura,

Well done!!

Thanks!

The UK only tests in certain years: at ages 7, 11 and I think 14. So I don't think there's a test that would be useful for your daughter.

I'd order some books from CGP Books to get an idea of what is being taught. The books are cheap. Once you've researched on the CGP site, you can order them from bookdepository.co.uk.

Best wishes
