For a variety of reasons, I'm interested in finding out how long the average pediatric OT session for SPD takes. If it makes any difference, I'm looking to compare to my own kiddos' in office SPD treatment sessions, which have typically been two hours long, one day per week but are now being shortened to one hour, one day per week due to the agency's financial situation. Is one hour typical or is two more common? Any reason to believe your kiddo does better with a longer session?

Thanks. Having to make some decisions on whether this agency is going to be the best fit for us...not an easy call. We are thrilled with the services, but not so happy with the financial fallout.

Mine was kind of an odd situation. My dd was the very first person this OT worked with after her certification. She came out to my house for 2.5-3 hours every 2 weeks. She always left stuff for me to use with my dd over each two week period. The task was always barely within my dd's abilities at first, but she was able to do it easily around the one-week mark and had no problems at all after two weeks. The first 30-45 minutes was spent doing assessments of various types to see what kind of progress my dd made, then another hour was spent doing a variety of activities so the OT could figure out what she should assign for the next two weeks. Then the last hour or so was spent teaching me how to guide my dd through the assigned activities. My dd was 5yo at the time.

I did several followup OT sessions for fine motor skills, but they were done in group classes at The Handwriting Clinic.

Ours have always been 1 hr/once a week. I know that is standard for our area.

30-45 min once a month. It's the free EI from the state, though, so that is probably different from private OT stuff. It's more of an assessment & demonstration of what we should be doing at home, and we are supposed to really be the OT ourselves.

Ours was 1 hour, once a week for my 6yr old. And they worked on more than sensory.. They also did fine motor and attention.

When Calvin had OT for SID/motor skills it was one hour once a week, rising to one hour twice a week.

When we first began it was one hour twice a week. Now it is one hour once a week right after 45 minutes of speech. It is a private clinic.

I work as an OT at a private clinic. We typically see kids twice a week for 53 - 60 minutes per session.

Thanks, everyone. That definitely gives me some insight into what is happening at our clinic. I'm not so frustrated to know that an hour seems to be standard practice. I'd been getting 2 hours but now it's been cut back to one without explanation other than "your insurance doesn't pay enough." I understand the realities, but at the same time want my DC to get everything they need. If 2 hours was standard other places, we'd be moving on.
