Anyone ever heard of a book by Gombrich--
_A Little History_, or something like that? I think it's like SOTW, but I'd love to know if anyone has an opinion on it. (for my sil)

Do you mean Little History of the World? Yes, it is similar to SOTW but for a little older student (middle school). We have it and it's nice, little dated and with many history bks of it's time, a little Eurocentric. There is a version on Audible as well.

Gombrich's little book certainly isn't as comprehensive as Susan's four-volume SOTW, but as an overview for a junior high school student, it worked well for us.
I try to find something like it for my older (14yo) son to read every couple of years as a review of sorts. He really enjoyed A Little History of the World.
Take a look here (http://books.google.com/books?id=cDCHcXW5_ugC&printsec=frontcover&source=gbs_summary_r) for a Google Books preview.

I plan on using it for middle school, along with Van Loon's Story of Mankind (just for variety).

I bought it for my 8 year old, and he is enjoying it. After listening to the first two Story of the Worlds more than once, he was ready for something new.
