I want to use either of these for my 10th grader this coming year.
Can anyone review them or compare them for me? BF looks really nice and Notgrass looks pretty good too.
I would be doing either BF medieval or the Notgrass World History

I am using BF Ancients and Notgrass Exploring World History for my 2 highschoolers and I like them both. I like them because they can be used as is or you can add to them if you desire. I'm using the BF guide as is for my DS, but for my DD we're using Notgrass as the framework for her history and adding in a few more books. I will definitely be adding to the Bible portion in order for her to get the Bible credit. I do know that MFW curriculum uses Notgrass as their history spine in their highschool program. Do you have any specific questions, I would happy to see if I could answer them for you.

i have heard that notgrass gives little writing instruction. Is BF any better?
Is BF more "complete" as in does it include vocab, more writing instrction etc...? I like the "looks" of BF better from the samples I have seen

I am finishing up Ancients with my ds in the next few weeks and we will be moving on to medieval. It does include vocab from literature, discussion prompts, writing prompts for essays and research reports, and short answer questions some of which are Bible related. It does not include writing instruction. You could easily apply what you have been studying such as IEW, Wordsmith, etc. to the assignments in BF. We are using IEW.

OKay, thanks, we currently use Wordsmith and I was going to have her move to Wordsmith Craftsman next year. I just can't decide. I think I like the book choices better with BF...we'll see.

I love it because its not overwhelming like SL and we can add more whenever we see fit. The books have been fun, interesting, and informative to read!
Can you tell me about Wordsmith and Wordsmith Craftsman? Ds is a great writer naturally and loves to write but I wanted him to get some structure and basics down to help him raise the level of word choice, and paragraph structure so that is why I chose IEW. However, I think he may kill me if I don't offer a little variety, lol!

Wordsmith is more of a creative writing program. My dd is a very natural writer too, so if I had known the content of Wordsmith I may have had her skip it. It is geared for grades 7-9. There are alot of word "games", how to write sentences creatively, then the last 3rd of the book focuses on figures of speech, describing a person, narrative-sequence and detail, writing dialogue etc...and lastly point of view and the "story".
I believe the wordsmith craftsman is more of the "how to" write papers etc...
Again, I would skip wordsmith and move to craftsman if your child has had previous writing instruction, he may get bored with the first one.
I was then going to use Jensen's Format writing after craftsman .
Another idea I had was to use LLATL Gold series along with BF because there are alot of writing and poetry assignments in it. Not sure if it would be too much reading though.

I think I will post a msg asking the difference between The Elegant Essay and Wordsmith Craftsman. Not sure if I want to do 1 or both, sigh.
We are currently doing LL8 with BF Ancients and it's too much to do it justice. So when we finish it I will have ds do double duty with the literature from BF adding more when needed and using some combination of free guides online, Teaching the Classics, TWEM, and Windows to the World.
