Hi, another dyslexic question for dd. She has done copywork and some dictation plus a bit of intro grammar from the old LLATL. But I realized that approach to grammar isn't going to work for her. I have FLL 1/2 and the R&S books, but would Winston Basic be better? I could do some FLL this semester and something else next year. She is 10 now, in 4th grade. We've been doing a special program with a Neurodevelopmentalist, and it's helped her a lot with catching up in Reading and Math, but we are ready to move on.

Also, would R&S or Teaching Textbooks be good for math? Thanks, Lillian

Have you looked at Growing with Grammar? We use MUS for the younger ones and TT for the older, so I don't know anything about TT for the younger.

I have been using Winston Grammar kind of hit-and-miss this year. It is good for a student who has trouble with writing, as there is practically NO writing. The first several lessons (which is all we've done) focus on identifying and labeling parts of speech. I've heard it said that WG teaches parsing vs. diagramming. Each part of speech is color coded on cards and the student is expected to lay the cards out in order, then mark their sentences accordingly.

WG has been just 'ok' here. If you can find it cheap, I'd say to give it a try. My main gripe is that there are very few practice sentences, and if your ds already has a good grasp of grammar the program will go by very rapidly.

Lillian,

I would be temped to go through FLL 1/2 at double pace, then do something like Winston (we do Junior Analytical Grammar). I like that progression because FLL teaches all the terms, and has the child identify them in isolation. I don't use the script as laid out because it is way to much repetition for a 4th grader, but you can use the summary at the top to see what is covered. For example if Common/Proper Nouns are covered I have my kiddo give me an example of each, then we move on. My 2nd dd did FLL 1/2 at double pace this way. Then after they have the basic ideas they can take them farther and identify them in a sentence.
