It's for a k-1st grade Bible Class for our co-op.... the topics don't have to be these, so if anyone has other suggestions, I'm just trying to come up with stuff for an 8 week class. I'd prefer a good children's book. Thanks,
Kristine

How about the Frances books by Russell and Lillian Hoban? She learns a lot of those lessons in the books. Bread and Jam for Frances, a Birthday for Frances, etc.

. . . two of my favorite books are Reuben and the Quilt (http://tinyurl.com/2fmsrh) and Reuben and the Blizzard (http://tinyurl.com/2xcnwa).

The stories center on an Amish boy, and the illustrations are by P. Buckley Moss, a well-known artist whose prints feature Amish/Mennonite subjects.

The first deals with the boy's family's response to the theft of a special quilt they were making for a charity auction. Absolutely perfect. This book belongs in every church library everywhere--well written, not preachy, and just plain right.

The second is a little hazier in my memory, but the point of it was that somebody had to go somewhere during the middle of a blizzard, and the family's horse-drawn sled was just the thing--it worked when all the cars were snowed in.

Papa Panov's Special Day (http://www.amazon.com/Papa-Panovs-Special-Ruben-Saillens/dp/0842377417/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1205965407&sr=8-1)

This was my daughter's favourite book as a young child. It is about love and generosity even when you have nothing. It is set at Christmas but the message deserves to be told any time of year...

Here is a review of it from Amazon:

In this lovely picture book for older children, Papa Panov is an elderly shoemaker, feeling lonely on Christmas Eve. He reads about the birth of Jesus, long ago, and how Mary and Joseph had been turned away at the inn. If they had come here, he thinks to himself, I would have taken them in and cared for them. After drifting off to sleep, Papa Panov has a dream in which Jesus says he will come and visit the old shoemaker the next day. Eagerly, Papa Panov watches the streets on Christmas day, looking for Jesus. Along comes the humble street sweeper, and then a homeless woman and her child, and others who are down on their luck and in need. Papa Panov, though he wants to be watching for Jesus, kindly reaches out to each one who comes his way, offering a bit of food and comfort. When the day ends and Jesus apparently has not come, Papa Panov is disappointed -- until in another dream Jesus says that he had come after all! "I was hungry, and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me water, I was cold and you took me in. All the time you were helping them, you were helping me!"

I have a character book entitled A Child's Book of Character Building, Ron and Rebekah Coriell, which includes stories about most of these topics. There are blackline sketches, but no color illustrations. Other than that, I'll list some ideas below:

Courage- David & Goliath (This is what I would have said; I don't have any other suggestions.)

Prayer - The psalms of David? One book I own: He is My Shepherd, The 23rd Psalm for Children, David and Helen Haidle. I also have a book entitled A Child's Book of Prayer, Helen Sudell, Ed., Lorenz Publishers, that has a section on prayer.

Listening-

Patience- Job?

Thankfulness-Mary's annointing of Jesus' feet?

Sharing- Quiltmakers Gift (no other suggestions)

Obedience - Jonah? The Child's Book of Prayer, that I mentioned above, also has a section on obedience to God's will.

Forgiveness - Job?

My library has wonderful picture books regarding Biblical themes, so I generally check out books from them when I want extra reading on any particular Bible story.
