My ds, 15, is taking pre-algebra and biology this year. He struggles in math.
He will not be ready for chemistry next year because we will not be done with algebra 1.

I have been reading through old science related threads for an hour and am more confused than when I started.

What are some high school level sciences that he could take that won't require algebra?

Thanks,
~Christy

You could do Apologia Biology. Dr. Wile explains any math that is there very well. There isn't very much math in the biology anyway.

I think he could do Hewitt's Conceptual Physics The High School Program. It does require some very basic equation manipulation (F=MxA or rearranging M=F/A, etc.) I highly recommend it.

:iagree:
There is also a Conceptual Chemistry text by John Suchocki (Paul Hewitt's nephew), and a Conceptual Physical Science Explorations by Hewitt, Suchoki & Hewitt (Paul's daughter), which includes chemistry, physics, and a bit of earth science & astronomy. Or maybe you could try a Teaching Company course in a subject like Geology?

He started the year with Apologia Biology, but has since dropped that and is using living books for his study. He will do the same for Chemistry next year. Here's the website we are using to choose the living books for his study. I'll link you to the chemistry page...

Conceptual Physics mentioned above will meet his high school Physics requirement. Then he'll be ready for Chemistry the following year. Many sources recommend taking physics before chemistry anyway (ie: author of Rainbow Science).

If you need help teaching this, Texas Tech ISD (https://www.depts.ttu.edu/ode/ec2k/Heading.asp?heading_id=270) offers an accredited distance course using Conceptual Physics.

Or how about Earth Science or Environmental Systems depending on his interest? These are two standard science courses which meet Texas state graduation requirements. Switched on Schoolhouse offers a high school Earth Science elective and Texas Tech ISD offers Environmental Systems, but I'm sure there are many other curricula to choose from.

Conceptual Chemistry is a great program for those without enough math and those who aren't mathy. If your ds isn't going to be going into the sciences, this is a great course. My dd is going into the sciences and is doing it along with lab work. She's going to do an advanced Chem later with all the math so that she can take an AP exam or something like that later.

We're also going to do Conceptual Physics, but that's for next year.

fwiw, my dd is mathy but didn't want to do the math. Now she suddenly thinks math is okay (well, not long proofs) and tells me she could so have done a mathy Chem this year (groan.)

Beginnings Publishing sells a short math course called "Bridge Math" for kids starting their Chemistry before finishing Algebra. You could use Bridge Math before other science programs, as well.

We are uing Paradigm (sp) Integrated Physics and Chemistry, it is also correlates to TX standards.

10th gr -- earth science (or a combined course like Hewitt's Conceptual Physical Science) OR enviro. sci

11th gr - Chem

12th gr - physics
