OK, I have Level 1 Chemistry and recently bought prelevel. We plan to use these as I mentioned before, as a supplement with all the kids doing an experiment together. I haven't noticed the word designed stand out in the Level 1 and avoid the Biology because I know of the author's beliefs.

Do you think the word "formed" would be an appropriate substitution in the prelevel book? I don't want to just toss it since they are so expensive but I certainly don't agree with "designed" and wouldn't have bought it if I had know this was the case. I will actually just :001_huh: deface my books and change it, brings tears to my eyes actually. Any other suggestions for good subtitutes that would make it secular in approach? Should I be aware of this problem with other books, chemistry or physics?

... or... you can read it as written, and at the end of the sentence say "Oh, it looks like this author believes things were designed to be a certain way. Our family believes _____."

We do that for a lot of books. :)

I read them with DC but they are also on the shelves and my kids read a lot of science on their own as well. I wouldn't have bought the book knowing her views if I knew she let little things like this in. If I hadn't read some of her comments on the yahoo group it might not have bothered me so much.

fwiw, the way that the word designed is actually used is in keeping with some printed literature on the subject that isn't ID or creationism.

Based on what I've seen in the level 1 Biology, it's barely used and most young dc aren't going to notice it or think twice about it. I'd simply read over it without dwelling on the design issue if that's an issue for you.

btw, what I understood from hearing her speak and talking with her afterward is that she's a creationist, not an ID proponent, and hopes to use ID merely to get conversation going between the three main camps, which doesn't happen yet.

Personally, the one criticism I have of her Level 1 biology is that some of the labs are just too easy for that level, but that it's quite easy to alter them to make them more up to the level we want. Her best work is her Chemistry, of course.

I think that many people use the word designed when they believe it evolved. The human nose is designed to filter.... blah blah...

I think that if it bothers you formed is a good substitute. Kudos for thinking of it, I actually had a hard time coming up with a sub word when I was trying to think of one.
