It's a junior high text published by McGrawHill/Glencoe and written by Spielvogel and National Geographic.

I'm considering using it for my eighth grader next year and as a spine for my fourth grader's next round of history. We want something that sticks a little closer to state standards because we plan to give a state world history test in 9th grade.

Has anyone had experience with this text? I'm curious about the text's readability, if the teacher's guide is useful, and what content is found in the Activity Workbook and Active Reading and Note-taking Workbook.

Check with Shawna in Texas. There was an extensive thread in K-8 a couple of weeks ago.

Thanks! I will search for that.

I have not enjoyed Glencoe texts, especially ones that are co-whatever (sponsored?) with National Geographic. They've been visually overwhelming and full of ads. That said, the idea of a Spielvogel text is very appealing, indeed!

We're using and loving the K12 Human Odyssey (not the Spielvogel Human Odyssey). It's excellent, and would stick close to standards, as you mentioned, since it's a K12 book. Have you looked at that?

I decided against JAT because I waited too long and didn't want to pay the prices for used that I was seeing, so I went with the high school Spielvogel and NG one called World History. We love it. Very readable. I imagine the JAT is very similar in text, but just more visually fun for middle grades. The TG is useful because it has the answers :tongue_smilie:, it's a fantastic doorstop, and I got it shipped for less than $10. I don't have the Activity Workbook, but we have Active Reading. It helps dd pull more specific things from the text, helps with outlining, and key vocabulary. We also have Reading Essentials Guide (I think it's for reluctant readers, but since we're using a high school text I got it anyway). It takes a few paragraphs of high interest text and has comprehension questions.

As far as K12's text, I bought it, too. I use the Glencoe text for my foundation (the online helps are fantastic). It's supposed to last us 3 years. The K12 text is just additional reading for us. It doesn't have any questions, but it's very good so far.
