I worked last night. A large German Shorthair came into the clinic after fighting with his two neighbor dogs. I think he got the worst of it as his testicles were literally hanging out of what was left of his scotum and he also had multiple lacerations on his neck and ears. Needless to say, this dog was castrated as soon as we could get him on the surgery table. The owner had not wanted to neuter him (was even written in his file as a puppy). Testosterone leads to foolish choices. If you are not breeding your male dog, get him neutered before the neighbor dog tries to do it for you!!:banghead:

My DH wanted me to breed our collie, or show him, rather than having him neutered. I quickly caught on -- you would be amazed (or maybe not) how many males shudder at the idea of neutering anything! :D

Needless to say, this method of avoiding castration was not on my to-do list, so I got the dog neutered.

Yeah, the male owner who brought this poor dog in last night was shuddering too....I think he was in more shock than the dog:D.

My Alakan Malamute came to me with his testicles intact. He had already experienced the joys of being a man and I didn't have the heart to do it so late and after the fact.
He is sweet sweet sweet. Actually goes out of his way to avoid conflict and only puts another dog in his place when necessary - and he is so big he doesn't use his teeth to do it! He just knocks the other dog down and lays on top of him.
Soph - is this an Alaskan Malamute thing? Someone once told me they "defend" by knocking a perpetraitor over and will rarely bite.
I honestly don't see the need to do it to him at all. And he's not out there knocking up any unfixed females.

I once had a big sweet orange cat adopt me. I was told to cut him - it would keep him from wandering and getting into fights or hit by a car. So I did - even though he was already 3 or so years old. He was killed by a car shortly after.

Have you started seeing folks requesting a vasectomy on their male dogs instead of neutering?

I have already seen that there are shots now available to neuter a dog by making him sterile rather than castration. I know this is still rather new, but sounds like a dream so that we wouldn't have to put dogs into surgery anymore.

He is a mutt, part German Shepard part Beagle if I had to guess and is almost 6 months old. The vet wanted $180 to do it but we found a clinic that would do it for $60 which really helped making the choice easier. In fact, I am so pleased with the clinic (and dh has some overtime $$), we decided to get "our" (this cat totally adopted us) outdoor female cat also spayed. Along with shots it will cost us another $60 but it is worth it.

The lady organizing the clinic has a big heart for animals especially cats, she even offered to donate the expenses if we couldn't afford it.

Another plus is that he is now cheaper to license. Still our main reason was to curb the male aggression and wandering.

It could be a breed related thing. I am not a Malamute expert but certain breeds do have specific behaviors like that.

I am sure there are those out there making such a request. Most vets are going to talk them into castration for behavioral and medical reasons that a vasectomy will not change.
Rams are often vasectomized rather than castrated for indicating heat in the herd type reasons.

A decade ago they were just starting to talk about vaccinating female dogs so they would begin to produce antisperm antibodies. I think it may be a long time before spaying and neutering goes away as the shots they are talking about will not eliminate hormone induced cancers and other conditions that intact animals get later in life.
