Okay, from a previous post in a forum, I understand I need my daughter to take algebra. She is doing R & S grade 8 this year and there is no 9th grade math at R & S. I am considering Teaching Textbooks, but they are very expensive and I'm not sure if we can afford it for next year. Anyway, does anyone have any experience in what they did after R & S grade 8? If so, how did it work for you?

Thanks,
Terry

Terry, I used MUS Pre-Algebra, followed by Classmate Algebra.

We weren't too crazy about MUS at that level. Many of the explanations left us confused. Classmate was a really good program, but, if I had it to do all over again, I would have chosen a regular text instead. This way, I would have been able to work alongside my dd.

If your dd likes and does well with R&S, she might like the Lial's series - Intro. to Algebra. It has clear explanations, (so I'm told - I will be taking a look at it soon) and lots of real-life application problems. I think Lial's is similar in style to R&S.

R&S prepares students well for upper-level math, IMO. My dd did really well in her ps math classes, and she feels that R&S played a part in that.

Could you tell me where I could find Lial's?

Thanks

I'm confused. Is there a Workbook, and a Students solution manual and a video?

A text book with lessons and problems in it.
A solutions manual and digital videos which teach the lessons.

Here's the DVT:

We're doing Lial's Intro Algebra after R&S 8. They do have similar formats--there is a lesson and practice problems before the main problem set. FWIW before that we did Singapore 1-6. Ds wasn't quite ready for algebra (he struggled through 5 & 6) so we tried TT pre-algebra. That didn't work out well here. We switched over to R&S 8; he liked that better. He said the explanations were clearer and the lessons weren't as boring. For R&S we only did the odd problems. We're doing the same with Lial's. For us the Lial's student book is enough as it has answers to the odd problems in back and answers to all the review problems and tests. I found a used copy of the 7th ed on Half for about $10.
