Has anyone else here read this book? My daughter and I were trying to read it. We read the first two chapters and find the book to be so irritating. We decided not to read any more of it.
I just finished The Moffats and can hardly wait to read the next one. It was very enjoyable. My daughter and I are now reading The Thieves of Ostia. We've only read the first chapter, but it already has us hooked.
I also just finished McGuffey's Third Eclectic Reader and am getting ready to start the Fourth Reader.

I liked the Great Brain books! I read them all when I had my first dd and was on my 6 week maternity leave. I nursed and read them. :) However, I tried to read them to my own kids a few years ago and they didn't like them at all...one of the few read-alouds I set aside.
My girls (11 & 13) are reading the Caroline Lawrence books -- they have about 10 from the library right now (we're studying the Romans)!
Those McGuffey's are great reads too! Keep up the great reading! Have you thought of starting a blog as a record of your learning journey?

My DD loves the Great Brain books. I haven't read them in forever.

I should do that. I hadn't thought of that. I have never blogged before, but I could get my daughter to help me. Thanks for the suggestion. :001_smile:

I read the whole series as a child, too. My 11 yo dd read them, and she liked them, too. But my 9 yo dd can't get into them.

I like the Great Brain books; I read them as a child. My dc listened to several of them on CD during car trips and enjoyed them.

I found these books to be hilarious!
But--to each her own. We don't all have to like the same thing.:)

My dw loved the Great Brain books growing up, and my dd is enjoying them too, but they're not really my style. We differ over Roald Dahl, too, and a few other authors. I don't think it's a big deal if you don't care for a books like these. They are fun reading for many children (and grown-ups!) but not "required" to be an educated adult.

I remember reading all of these as a child, and loving them. I bought the book again this year and pre-read it. There were a few points in the book I had to think about in light of my 10 year old. He likes to act out what we read. I think at 10, he will have some discernment, and there will be some good discussion about some of the actions of the great brain.
I'm looking forward to seeing his reaction to the books. We are slated to read it in a few weeks.
