To solve this by completing the square

x^2-14x+33<0

I want him to have the first step be

x^2-14x<-33

He wants the first step to be

x^2-14x+33+16<0+16

I know that both methods result in

X^2-14x+49<16

but I think it is important to isolate the x terms, but I can’t explain why. One obvious reason is a greater chance of error in his method, but I feel like there are more important reasons. Maybe I am wrong.

What would you suggest?

Thanks,
Kendall

In other words BOTH of your methods are correct.

I personally think like you... but I've had a few students over the years who think like your son!--Again I've seen BOTH methods taught in textbooks...

As long as he continues to get the correct answer let him work the problem his way...

Jann,

Thanks so much! I'll let him do it that way provided he doesn't make frequent mistakes.
