with a then 7th grader, and take 7th and 8th grade to do VideoText. I ask because I already have VT (used it with an 8th grader...he is now getting A's in Algebra 2 in public school - the only kid in his class to do so, and the teacher believes it is due to ds having gotten through all but the last module of VT instead of a "regular" algebra class). DD, almost 12 and technically a 5th grader (although she is in 6th grade TT - and doing fine in it) will technically be a 6th grader next year..and doing TT 7. I like having a "teacher in a can" as I am not a math person.
Would you have a by then 13 going on 14-yr-old go ahead and start VT w/o a year, first, of pre-algebra???

Admittedly I've never used TT, but I have used VT.. and from what I read and hear, the transition between the two is very hard because they refer to the same methods differently.
If it were me, I'd just start right in VT. It is basic enough in the beginning that your younger one will get it without trouble.

I haven't used TT either, so I don't know about the transition from TT to VT. (My dd is finishing up Singapore Math this year). But, I do plan on using Video Text over 7th and 8th grades.
You wouldn't need a year of pre-algebra before VT, because the first module of Video Text IS pre-algebra. It reviews all the math they should have had by that point, and puts it all in the proper context, giving everything a name, and putting it all together to give a solid foundation for the algebra in the other five modules.
