I want to combine literature and history next year (dd will be in grade 5). I already know I'm going to be using SOTW2. However, I really want to tie that time period in with a solid schedule of books that my dd would read to coincide with whatever we are studying each week/month etc. I realize I could throw this together myself, but it would require me to do a good deal of planning if I wanted to make it work the way I'm "visualizing" it. I need comprehension questions etc. for the books and I cannot do that unless I read each one myself and put together the questions etc...

With that all said, I keep looking at Sonlight's Level 6 readers and history. I have most of the books for history already (Usborne, etc) and would be able to purchase and/or use the library for the readers. I'd have to get the Instructors Guide which is what would tie it together for me. I've seen a sample of the IG and it looks very close to what I'm looking for.

Sonlighters - what do you think of the history and reader format for Level 6? Is it worth the money for me to buy the Instructors Guide for all Sonlight subjects just to use it for history and the readers?

What think ye?

TIA!!!:001_smile:

I think so. I used Core 6 w/my younger dd in 5th/6th gr.

If you have most of the books, that makes it even better for you.

You have the option to take advantage of the other aspects of the IG, like mapwork, timeline, etc. if you so desire, but it's fine if you want to use it exclusively for the history/readers.

We really enjoyed the readers in Core 6. :001_smile:

This is my seventh year using Sonlight for history, literature, and Bible. My older two boys (7th and 4th grades) are doing Core 6 right now. I use the IG primarily as a schedule; I don't routinely use the vocab or comprehension questions.

I am not sure what you mean by "all the subjects". The Core IG contains a schedule and associated material for Bible, history, readers, and read-alouds. It doesn't include any other subjects. Science and LA have separate IGs at this level. Does knowing that help you make a decision?

See if you can find the IG used. That way you have a schedule if you need it, but not at the full cost.

I only use the IG for history, readers, and read alouds and it has been worth it to me. I paid $60 for it new, but you could probably find it for less on eBay. Sonlight prices usually increase every April when their new catalog comes out, so if you do want to purchase the IG new, now would be the time to do it.

Thanks for the tip! :)

I'm still mulling, mulling, mulling.....

I wouldn't try Core 200 without the instructor's guide.

Interesting note I didn't expect though:
I have noticed my son only reads what's assigned for that day even though he could be further ahead. It could be that the reading is much more intense than I thought it would be and takes him longer than I thought it would. I assumed he would grab the books and read them until he was finished. Not so.

His reasoning was that he doesn't want to "get ahead" of the schedule and be confused on what to read each day and he doesn't want to have to answer all those questions at one time (when he finishes the book). If we didn't have an IG and I just handed him to books I think he'd be further into them by now but maybe rushing through some of them without really taking the time to think on the issues.

Just something interesting to think about. The questions in the IG are ones I could come up with on my own but handing him the schedule and the questions is a breath of fresh air in my "teacher" time of our homeschool life!
