View Full Version : Makeup Question

I know I said I don't like makeup, but I decided to give it another shot today. I recently bought some Revlon New Complexion One-Step Compact Makeup (Can you tell I'm reading off the container?;)) to replace the liquid foundation I've used before. I do like the way it goes on, but I'm not sure this is it; I'd be willing to try something else. So, just the foundation, a little blush, and Carmex for me today. It still feels like a lot, but I do like the way my skin tone is evened out and the extra color from the blush. I've been looking a little washed out lately--probably from being cooped up inside. What I don't like is how the makeup ends up all over my cell phone when I go to use it. Yuck! Is there a way to stop this from happening? Is there a makeup that doesn't do that?

Also, little things trigger my allergies and make my face start itching. I'm worried I'm going to scratch streaks into my foundation. I know the perfumes in the stores I took dd to today were part of the problem, but I'm not sure the makeup itself doesn't cause some of it. I think I scratch my face pretty regularly without makeup too, I'm just not worried about the streaks. Maybe this is a silly question, but if the makeup is showing up under my nails, it must be coming off my face where I scratch, right?

I'm still not going to wear makeup every day, but does anyone have suggestions for dealing with these problems so I can be more comfortable when I do choose to wear makeup?

You might be happier with one of the mineral foundations or even just a light dusting of powder to even your skin out. While you probably aren't leaving traces in the foundation when you scratch or hold your phone with your cheek, you are less likely to see residue from the mineral base or powder.

That said, I have only used one kind of mineral, the one from L'Oreal. It works fine for me, but I mostly prefer to wear no foundation at all...just a bit of concealer and light powder. My skin really only looks its best when I'm pregnant, so maybe I need to look into that option... roflol.

Oh, one other thing...I got less residue/wear-off from other types of foundation by blotting my face a couple of times per day with plain tissue. This was particularly helpful for my oily skin.

Hope this helps a bit. :)

I don't like the feel of makeup either. I often wear just powder. I do have a foundation that I like. It is Clinique Almost Makeup. It is really light and nice. I also use Clinique powder too.
Just another one to try.

Adding: I have odd skin. I react easily to many things regarding sensitivities. This stuff does not do that to me when other "hypo-allergenic" and "sensitive" skin things do.

Thanks, Mamagistra. I was just reading the other makeup thread below and wondering again about the mineral makeups. I don't even know where to buy these and it sounds like they need to be ordered. I'd rather buy something I can see first to make sure I'm getting the right color and all. L'Oreal should be available at Target or Walmart though, right? I know so little about makeup!

I think I've seen Clinique in stores, too. I will look for these two brands.

What I like about Clinique is that you can go to their counter and get "made up" in order to try out their stuff. And if your skin reacts to the product after a purchase, they have a guarantee.

I tried one kind of mineral makeup. It was way to shiny and make me itch! I hated it. I tried to like it, but just couldn't. I gave up, went to the Clinique counter and told her to make me up very lightly and subtly.

I don't wear foundation everyday (okay, maybe 5 times a year!), but I do wear tinted sunscreen under powder everyday. Spending 6 months of every year tanning my skin to the color of coffee until my early 20's did enough damage to last a long, long lifetime. So, now I don't go out without "environmental protection.":001_huh: This really makes a difference for me. Right now, I'm using a tinted daily sunscreen from Dr. Denese, which I ordered from QVC. It's a "unique" color in the jar, but barely visible on the skin--almost transparent. Clinique also makes one that I like called Cityblock ( I think.) I wear loose powder from Lancome over that. All of these last a very long time for me--I use a light hand when applying any kind of make-up. My skin is super-sensitive, and I don't like to "feel" like I have stuff on my face. I know tinted sunscreen isn't very glamorous, but there you go!

That sounds like it would be outside of my normal comfort level, but it is probably just what I need. So, Clinique makeup counter is probably not in Walmart or Target, huh? I was just at the mall today. I was hoping to not have to go back for a very, very long time. :ack2: I do, however, have a pair of jeans to exchange for my skinny, impossible to find pants for 13yods. He needs about a 27x33!

I've really hated all the mineral makeups I've tried, too. I'm so glad I'm not the only one! First, it was far too messy to apply. I do not want to have to clean up the sink that much just to do my face!

I also learned how to do the makeup in a natural, pretty way by going to the Clinique counter. The girl there was very nice and even told me not to bother with foundation -- my skin looks good nearly naked. I do use a pressed powder to even out the tone, but that's it. My everyday makeup is nothing more than a moisturizer with spf, powder, mascara (2 coats as I have quite short lashes) and a tinted lipgloss. I love tinted lip glosses!

Yes, I found mine at Tar-jhay. ;) I can't recall the actual name...Bare Nekkidness Veil o' Beauty...something like that. ;) Just look carefully because them-thar minerals are beginning to show up as blush and eyeshadows, too, and I doubt those colors are very flattering as foundation. :D

Also, M2LM's suggestion for the Clinique is great, too. I love their Almost Makeup makeup; I just never get to the mall to buy it. :auto:

But hey: if we go shopping with M2LM, she knows where all the shiny lip stuff is! :001_cool:

Honestly, I wouldn't wear foundation on my whole face. You only need to apply something to cover up the area of your face that is red or blotchy - which on most people is around cheeks, or the chin. You'd have to look at your face. If you can find something natural (I don't think liquid makeup is natural) to cover the red/splotchy areas only, you shouldn't have any issues with makeup getting on your phone. There are lots of brands that sell foundation as a powder - not a loose powder, but a compact. MAC has a great one. I use a foundation stick from Bobby Brown and it lasts me forever because I don't use it on my whole face. Only for special occasions do I put loose powder on top with blush. Usually for daily wear, I use the foundation stick as both my eye area concealer and to cover the red in my cheeks and that's it. Not even blush.

The other option esp. since you don't like to wear makeup, is to wear a tinted moisturizer only. Hope that helps you some!

determine what color you would need? I've been considering ordering this, and a cream blush, but unsure about her products? Thanks, Lacy

I have said this before, I love Mary Kay. I like that I am supporting people and not a huge conglomerate. Mary Kay stands behind what they sell and because it is direct sales, you get great customer service.

Their products are wonderful! I wear foundation everyday and it is so light you don't realize it's there. Their moisturizers are wonderful, too.

Something to keep in mind with make-up, the drier the make-up, the older it will make you look. MAC cosmetics is the perfect example, it's like chalk and the powder fills in the small lines in your face and makes you look old. That's why a good moisturizing foundation is so important.

IMO, Clinique is really bad for sensitive skin. The moisturizer is loaded with alcohol and it dried my skin out something awful, crazy right? Plus, it is so overpriced.

Different experience here. I used to use Mary Kay. Loved it. Then they switched their formula and I cannot use it anymore. I makes me break out.

Clinique does not. I use the Almost Makeup. It is very light and thin. I use the powder. As far as the moisturizer goes, there is this pink stuff (I can't recall the name) that is wonderful and not drying at all.

I do use MK Time Wise 3 in 1 cleanser. I can't use the lotions though.

So I have to disagree on the sensitive skin part. I have very peculiar skin that reacts easily. My experience with MK used to be great, but not anymore. So I went to Clinique and found things that worked great without breaking me out.

I like CG Smoothers (Cover Girl). It's a tinted moisturizer with sunscreen, and it feels very light. You won't have any problems with it coming off.

I love my bare minerals. Feels like nothing. Normally do not ever wear make up. But like it once in a while - so this is perfect.

Some of the mineral make ups have bismuth, which many people have reactions to and it makes you look shiny. I had that problem with the Loreal mineral make up, but not with the MK make up.

The only downside to trying foundation in a department store is that department stores have fluorescent lights, which give a green cast. If you try a foundation there, walk over the door or even go outside with a mirror and look at your face in natural light.

Lacy,

I went to the Bobbi Brown counter and had them determine which color was best. I think I have fairly average, natural skin tone- I mean, I'm not pale and I'm not tan. I use the "warm sand" color. You want to make sure you get the color that matches your skin so that you can't see a line between where you put the foundation on and where you haven't.

I love Bobbi Brown's products. They don't make me itch (which some make-up does) and the colors are very natural. I have found that using the brushes helps tremendously in getting the makeup applied neatly. It was a big investment about 10 years ago - buying her brushes and makeup. But the brushes last literally forever so that was a one time purchase and the make up lasts a long time too - but I don't wear it everyday either. I also love her toner and her Vitamin Enriched Face Base. That is my favorite of her products - it's a moisturizer that doesn't clog my pores and leaves my face super soft and smooth. It's too heavy in the summer though, in my opinion, so I only use it in the winter.

You can PM me if you have additional questions. I've been faithful to BB for at least 10 years now.
